I enjoyed reading the book, but really liked his other books much better. I think part of the problem was that I was never really “invested” in the characters. As a result, I found myself just wishing for a conclusion rather than “rooting” for a particular character in the book.
I wasn't bothered by the introduction of magic into a historical context as I enjoy a good fantasy yarn.
I highly recommend the author's historical fiction such as Whisky Rebellion.
Touring the Delaware Air Mobility Command Museum this summer, I can across this book in the gift shop. I'm so glad I did, because Mitchell Topal has written a wonderful story of Ray Firmani's life. Most of the story centers on Ray's dramatic life change from a new career at DuPont to a B-17 pilot over Europe. I highly recommend reading this book - I couldn't put it down. I gained a real appreciation for the hardships and sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation.
While visiting Mystic Seaport with my family this summer, I came across this humble little boat amidst towering sailing ships. I happened to glance at the description, and realized this Danish workboat and her crew had more impact on history than any of the sailing ships around her.
I highly recommend this book. A lot can be learned from the Danish culture with regards to freedom and liberty for all countrymen.
