I love the title novella. I don't know much about fly fishing or fishing in general but I had the feeling I could read about it for forever. The writing style is so unique. The two other stories were good, too but I enjoyed Macleans writing style more than the story itself in those two. They were just a tiny bit meh, I can't even really remember what the second one was about. Anyway, this would have been a 4 star rating if it had just been the title novella.
“In our family, there was no clear line between religion and fly-fishing—there isn't anything in it that doesn't depend on what comes before it for its meaning.”
A River Runs Through It is the semi-autobiographical story of Norman Maclean and his relationship to his brother, Paul. The story is told through the mutual passion for fly-fishing, a passion also shared with the two men's father. It's a brilliant story of the complexities of relationships, set in the raw world of western Montana.
This is a story collection. A River Runs Through It is only the first story. This is critical because THAT story is really good but I really couldn't get into the others.
Okay, I hated them.
The end.
