I recently decided to re-read (ok, I'm listening to the audio versions) this series since it's been a few years and so much has happened in Virgin River over the course of 18 or so books. So I went back to the beginning and fell in love with this town all over again.
Mel and Jack are the backbone of the Virgin River series and book one is their love story and the reader's introduction to this small California town. Mel is widowed and at loose ends, so she packs up everything and takes a midwife job in this backwater town. She doesn't have a clue what she's getting into and upon reaching town is ready to go back to LA. Jack is a retired Marine who opened a bar in the small town. He's laid back, enjoying a carefree bachelor life until Mel rides into town and turns everything upside down.
I just love Ms Carr's writing. She's so descriptive of the people and locales. I can just picture the town and just want to go for a visit. And her characters are just so easy to relate to, but they're also diverse and complex. She's created magic in this small town filled with a lot of ex-military folks.
I know when I pick up a Robyn Carr book that my heart-strings will be tugged. I cried along with Mel as she worked through her grief over losing her husband. But also rejoiced as she found love again.
Virgin River is a great beginning to one of my favorite series and I highly recommend it for those who love small-town romances.
