I don't know why I keep trying Emily Henry books. From the first chapter I knew it wouldn't be for me. Her stories are so one dimensional for me and I never believe the characters are actually in love. The friend dynamics in this story was fun but I kept getting mad about the lack of communication. These people are all best friends yet every single one of them keep things from each other for months? Totally unbelievable and the resolution was lack luster
Wowza. I am genuinely surprised by this book. From the beginning I fell in love with Adara's love interest. I mean c'mon he's the embodiment of the ‘touch her and you (literally) die' troupe. Not to mention the scene in the library in chapter 11??? Flawless.
The only gripe I have is the lack of description in the action scenes. Most of the time I couldn't tell what was happening because it was all happening so quickly with very little detail. Other than that, this was a great read and I can't wait to pick up the sequel when it releases. 4.5/5 stars
I was provided an ARC by NetGalley and HQ publishing in exchange for an honest review.
I didn't know what I was getting myself into but wow this book was a roller coaster of emotions for me. It was almost like looking into a mirror. Hannah is the first book character I saw myself in. We both lived through the same trauma, and it was refreshing to see someone just like me in a book. For a long time, I avoided books with this topic, but for some reason, this book spoke to me. I'm so glad I had the honor of reading it. Not to mention the epilogue was an exact replica of what happened to me and my forever. Dog and all.
Some of the things I loved was the setting and the friendships between all the characters. It really provided such a small town feel with everyone knowing everyone. The friendships Hannah made really showed the care everyone had for her and her daughter. Not to mention Andrew is such a gentleman. I was constantly swooning over him.
I did have some issues with the dialogue. I found some points to be confusing and hard to tell who was speaking. Some points didn't have “he said/she said” so I had to go back a few times to try to understand the conversation. Another issue I had was that we occasionally missed weeks at a time between scenes. I think it would have been nice to see them getting closer to make their relationship more believable. Even if it was just a look into their text conversations. It wasn't until the end that I finally accepted that they made sense together.
If the content of DV isn't triggering to you, I highly suggest you pick up this book. Romance aside, this was an empowering book about a woman taking control of her life and getting the freedom and independence she deserves.
It was a fast paced and great read until the last 5%. Honestly the ending felt like a rushed cop out. Even though the twist had more depth than I was expecting, it brought down the whole story. 3.5/5 stars
Was this unhinged? Yes. Would it have been a great story if it was longer and had a better ending with some character development? Absolutely. Would I recommend this? ...I mean if you're into men that shift into balloon animals, go right ahead sis. This was surprisingly pretty good
Who doesn't like a spicy story with immortal shifters?!?!
I was obsessed with the little autumn town of Ash Grove and of course the men. Big selling point there.
HOWEVER, the amount of goddamn grammatical and spelling mistakes was so disappointing. I kept getting taken out of the story. If you can look past it, this is a fun read. But I have a degree in English and it was really tempting me to DNF. Its not hard to have even a friend read your story and help edit it. Idk I'm definitely biased.
Oh also the ending was really rushed and predictable.
Quick side note: the troupes were a good time. When one of the guys kept saying “Mine” lawddddddddd.
I really enjoyed The Dare so I bought this one on a whim and WOW talk about exceeded expectations.
I loved every minute of this book. The character development was amazing and I really believed the relationships between everyone.
This is a read I haven't stopped thinking about since I finished it because I absolutely loved every second of it.
Harley Laroux is beyond talented and has quickly become an auto buy author for me.
I wish I could express more of my feeling about this story but it was genuinely just a happy, butterfly filled feeling the entire time. No words, just vibes.
Read it if you dont mind BDSM but as always, check the content warnings because it can be a lot for some.
Melissa Grace has done it again!
“Long Way Home” is the third installment in the Midnight in Dallas series. Although each book can be read on its own, they are all interconnected so you get the most out of it by reading the other books.
I'll be honest, I didn't follow that. I picked up the first book, “Home Is Where You Are” on Kindle Unlimited shortly after receiving the eARC from the author (btw thank you Melissa for this ARC-this review is completely honest and in no way effects my rating). I had a great time reading the first book and meant to pick up the second, but life got ahead of me so I skipped right to this third book.
Having read the first one, I immediately fell back into the world and the characters. I definitely missed some exciting plot points from the second, but was quickly brought up to speed in “Long Way Home.”
“Long Way Home” follows Derek Knights, a band member in the famous group, Midnight in Dallas. While dealing with some life altering news and decisions, he stumbles across Jo Kingsley. Jo's life was turned completely upside down after a series of unfortunate events, so she returns to her home town of Nashville to reevaluate her life. From there, the two spiral head first into a relationship and navigate their new lives together. Plus, there's an adorable dog, Izzie, who made the story so much fun.
Melissa Grace is the queen of insta-love relationships and butterfly inducing men. Although the third act conflict was cliche and I wish I got more of a view into the beginning weeks of Derek and Jo's relationship, this was still a fun read. I loved Jo's character development and felt Derek was the perfect match for her. It was exciting to be emerged into this world again and I can't wait to see what else Melissa Grace has to create.
Thank you again to the author for a copy of the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
I spent a majority of the book thinking this would be in the 3 star range but that epilogue really did me in so I had to bump it up to a 4. I loved all the characters and their dynamics were so refreshingly natural. I found some parts to be a bit slow but it eventually picked up.
The only draw back I had was the conflict at the end of the book. I felt like it was rushed and would have been better placed earlier in the book or at least drawn out a bit. Plus the reader knew of it from the start so it wasn't a surprise.
The spice was a 2/5 but I definitely thought their romance was the highlight here.
Speaking of highlight, I think this was my most highlighted book in a while. So many funny quotes and banter between the characters. Even the more serious parts regarding love had me swooning and covering my kindle screen with highlights.
I received a copy of the ARC by NetGalley and IBPA in exchange for my honest review.
I wanted to enjoy this book but unfortunately it missed the mark for me. The premise seemed interesting. However, this is pitched as a horror story, but I didn't get any of it.
I think the title and the cover are perfect. They encapsulate the story and are well done. I also thought for how short this novella is, the world building was well done.
Speaking of the length of the novella, I think this story would have been so much better as a novel. If there was more descriptive writing and dialogue between the main characters, the story could have been believable. Because of the length, there was not a lot of character development. We got a small glimpse at the characters, but it left something to be desired. I just wanted more from them. Also, the ending attempted to express a message regarding female empowerment, but I think it fell flat.
I unfortunately do not recommend this novella because there was too much confusion in the plot. Also, I found it weird that the trigger warnings were in the back of the book. I hope that was just on the ARC copy because they should be in the front and better described. Some of the actions in the book could be triggering to some, yet the warnings are too vague.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of the ARC in exchange for my honest review!
This is the perfect book to initiate the spooky season!
Amy, Jess, Melissa, and Liz all live in a suburban neighborhood where they became friends. At one of their monthly wine nights, they christen the development of their She Shed when they open a world of demonic possession. Together, they work to save their friend, and neighborhood.
Immediately from the first chapter, I was hooked into Amy's life. The atmosphere of a picture-perfect suburban neighborhood was humorous backdrop to such a bazaar situation. I loved the friendship dynamic and the writing style. It was like being a part of the group, included in all their decisions. I especially enjoyed the commentary on basic suburban neighborhoods and how they are all the same. Plus, Jess' character stole the show for me. She was so unapologetically herself in this cookie cutter neighborhood. It was refreshing.
There were some parts where the story was extremely slow. I appreciated the attention to descriptive detail, but this could have been a shorter book. Because the plot was so drawn out, I got bored around the halfway point. The resolution was also extremely cliché. I wish there was a bit more action, but I assume by the ending, that may be followed up in the future.
I would recommend this book to everyone. This is the perfect mix between comedy and a thriller. It is a fun piece for beginners in the genre as well as seasoned readers. This put me in the mood to pull out all my spooky Halloween books on my shelves. I had such a fun time reading this!
So much went down in so few pages. I got a bit scatterbrained at times but the spice and the men made up for it. I definitely think it could have been longer and elaborated on certain scenes but as a whole it was an easy, quick read.
“Gallows Hill” by Darcy Coates had me spooked to my core! I couldn't read it while home alone! I enjoy the thrill of scary stories and this one was top-tier for atmosphere. The perfect book to read at the start of spooky season!
Margot, who hasn't seen her parents for most of her life, finds she inherited their home and the family business, a winery, after their suspicious deaths. When Margot arrives at Gallows Hill, she discovers a curse on the land and fights for her life to escape the same fate as her parents.
Despite the story feeling a tad long at times between the action, this was such a thrilling read. I LOVED the atmosphere of the old, creepy house and the history. The plot is good, but the atmosphere was the standout for me. Not to mention the ending had my jaw dropped to the floor! I would have loved the end to be expanded upon because it was so interesting, but it was still satisfying nonetheless.
I would recommend this book if you enjoy thrilling, spooky, haunted reads that will keep you up at night. It was so fun following Margot on her journey of discovering the life she may have lived if she grew up on Gallows Hill.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!
Where do i even start... this one was weird for me. It started off strong and i was really enjoying the characters but the ending was a rollercoaster (and not in a good way). The spice felt so out of place and so unlike the characters that i was cringing the entire time. And what was that ending?? It didn't resolve anything.
This is one of those books that has me questioning what in the world i just read. Maybe it was the novella format and the book being too short to flesh out the characters or just the lack of chemistry between them but this was sadly not for me. Hopefully the other novellas in this series will be better than this one.
This book surprised me! The first book of the series left so much to be desired but this book had so much more to it. The characters were shelled out, the romance was there, and the smut wasn't weird!!! - a big feat compared to the 1st book. Although I am not a big fan of the miscommunication troupe, the fact that this was a novella made it tolerable. Overall, I enjoyed this book and can't wait for the continuation of the series.
This has been my favorite book of the 3 novellas in this series. I adored the instant connection the characters had and the background history they shared.
Despite this being such a short book, the plot is fleshed out, and the characters were described in a way that made me want them together from their first interaction. As always, I'm excited to read more of Ali Hazelwood's books.
Dolls and handmade puppets that move on their own? Absolutely horrifying.
I hate to say that this book wasn't even on my radar! The audiobook was available at my library so I grabbed it on a whim. Mood reading at its finest! I haven't had great experiences in the past with Grady Hendrix books, so it was a shot in the dark. But boy did I underestimate this story!
Dolls and puppets are a huge fear of mine. Remember that movie “The Boy” where the doll moves? Still gives me nightmares. This is that except with a freaky little talking puppet that is filled with demonic rage. My heart was pounding the entire time. The horror was so well done as well as the overall writing. I also felt like the grief aspects were done really well and didn't take me out of the story. I will forever be recommending this book if you want an intro to the horror genre. Will forever be chasing the heart pounding high this book gave me.
I only finished this a few days ago and already forgot the entire plot. I distinctly remember it being not great though...
This was my first Riley Sager book and I thoroughly enjoyed it.... until the last 20ish percent.
Summary: Following the tragic death of her husband, actress, Casey Fletcher, is sent to her family's lake cabin to stay out of the media's eye as she recovers. There, she meets her new neighbors. Supermodel, Katherine Royce, and her husband, Tom, who helped create a Facebook-like app. One drunken night, Casey notices something amiss at the Royce house across the lake and something feels off about Katherine's disappearance. Casey must work to find out what happened to this woman she barely knows, yet feels oddly drawn to her. Only in her investigation she learns there is something far more sinister happening on Lake Greene.
We begin with an unreliable, alcoholic, grief-stricken narrator. Most of the book was extremely well done. I was captivated by Sager's writing style and enjoyed the character dynamics. It almost felt like A.J. Finn's “The Woman in the Window” but better. I genuinely had no idea who was at fault for a majority of the story, which was refreshing.
However, Sager tried to share commentary on women's issues but missed the mark in the context it was shared. Also the last 20% of the book was just plain wild. Until this point I had been flying through the book. It felt as if the plot was out of place but was happening too fast yet felt so slow. It was confusing to say the least.
I still rate it 4.5/5 stars because I had a genuinely good time reading it and this was the best thriller/mystery I've read recently. As I have come to learn, Sager is a master at creating twists you never see coming. Highly recommend checking out this book.
Friends to enemies to lovers. What more could you want, right? Wrong. This started off with some potential but lord Christian was so beyond stupid I was irritated reading this. For being a lawyer, he is a Grade A dumbass- especially when it comes to women. There was also some tension mentioned in the book that was quickly brushed over with no explanation.
I did enjoy the world building and the characters, (except Christian) and I liked the flashes between past and present tense. Also I got a weird sense of deja vu while reading the ending even though I know for a fact I've never read this book before. It was strange but overall a decent read to pass the time on a long drive.
This was just okay for me. I should have known going into it since I wasn't a fan of two other books by Emily Henry but the summary intrigued me. Although the setting and idea behind the plot was interesting, the story as a whole was bland. I wasn't entirely sold on the relationship, the book lacked conflict, and the ending was especially lackluster. I did enjoy the banter though I'll give it that.
I loved the world but this book was unnecessarily long. The characters were also a bit one dimensional but the overall plot was good.
The good boy/bad girl trope just hits different. I desperately need MORE!
Loved the character dynamics, just wish it was longer to really develop that relationship!!!
This was such a fast paced, thrilling novella! I read it in one sitting and could not put it down.
“Petrified Women” follows Harley as she attempts to prank her boyfriend, Aiden. However, the prank goes too far when she witnesses his true self behind closed doors. Not to mention, he's an artist with creepy, life-like wooden figurines of women. Plus, that ending was so unexpected! I almost wish it was longer so I could see into the future!
Since this is a fairly short novella, I can't give too much away. But, I highly encourage you to read it. Its a quick, well written story, and it is on Kindle Unlimited, which is a plus! I can't wait to read more from Jeremy in the future.
***Quick mention that there is triggering content in this book, so please make sure you look those up before picking up this book. All the triggers are listed on the authors website.
Thank you so much Jeremy for reaching out for me to review this book for you. You are extremely kind and talented.
Wowowowow. I was nervous to read this because of all the internet hype. I'm so glad I did. I rarely give out 5 stars and this is so deserving of them. The character development from when Percy and Sam were kids to their adult life was so well described. I was immediately absorbed into the story and even though I saw what happened between them coming from a mile away, it was handled extremely well and made the characters seem real. Obsessed.
