One to continue to think on leaving me unsure how to rate this!
Part 1 - I almost abandoned the book. I thought maybe I was too old to understand.
Part 2 - Helped me understand the point of Part 1. And broke my heart.
I thought it would be more about candy...but it was a lot like a memoir...good, but not what I expected or wanted.
A similar idea to Mountains Beyond Mountains...one man doing what he can. This time the man is building schools in Pakistan. Great read!
Sally Rooney's writing is wonderful - so much so I finished this book while simultaneously disliking the characters and not caring much about the story. But the writing!
This is a hopeful book! Robinson introduces us to those most directly affected by current climate change: mostly women, mostly poor, mostly indigenous and/or non-white people and tells us how these people are making the world better for all of us.
Power, sex, intrigue...what more can you ask for? And a queen locked up in a Tower that bears your name (Beauchamp)! This is a wonderfully written piece of historical fiction. Nearly impossible to put down!
Well, I didn't actually finish this book...I had to get it back to the library. But, what I did read was alright. By the title you can kind of figure out the humor - a guy quits his life and moves to a retirement community in Florida. Maybe I'll pick it up again but I'm not in a hurry.
4 Stars for really good writing.
**spoilers**
I did not enjoy reading this book. Physical, mental, verbal, emotional, spiritual abuse. So much. She does overcome and that's amazing in itself.
Spoilers below.
Kristin Hannah is an immensely readable author which is why I finished this book. And why it received 2 stars instead of 1.
That said, had I known the extent of violence against women (physical, sexual, emotional) I would have skipped it.
Great character development! A very great story about what one person might be able to do and how even just the possibility can make him a better human being.
I love Anderson Cooper (all the way back to Channel One days). This was an interesting book in that it was very personal about his life and some of the tragedy he's covered. Made me realize how quickly the news moves past a “story” once it's been told.
Let me start by saying I have actively resisted reading this book due to its popularity. But I was getting ready for a roadtrip with the kids so I wanted an audiobook that would keep my attention. The Hunger Games did just that. It was a great listen; engaging story and characters. I look forward to the next roadtrip to listen to the next book.
I'm currently re-reading this wonderful book. Actually, I'm reading it aloud to a couple of residents where I work. Amazingly written, such wonderful characters...
3.5*
I can relate in some ways to a lot of this book. I was particularly moved by the Marriage section of the book.
Another “read aloud” book. I did this one over too long of a time...I think it would've been 4 stars otherwise.
Another fun story by Enger, lots of adventure and love. Curious about the potential of molding the narrator after himself...a writer wondering if he's a one-hit wonder and trying to make something out of himself without letting those around him know his fears. Quite good.
I love Robinson's writing.

He cleared his throat. “So. ‘Things happen for reasons that are hidden from us, utterly hidden for as long as we think they must proceed from what has come before, our guilt or our deserving, rather than coming to us from a future that God in his freedom offers to us.' My meaning here is that you really can't account for what happens by what has happened in the past, as you understand it anyway...
Immensely readable, at times devastatingly sad and others frustratingly cruel; staggeringly hopeful.
