This was a fantastic look at life with the early years of Communist China. Kent really paints what he and his family goes through and describes in great deal his escape attempts. Worth reading for not only a look back into history and remember the struggles some have gone through, but to look at today's world and do our best to prevent the tragedies of the past from repeating.
The Starless Crown has some amazing world building in it. James Rollins really does go out of his way to make the world feel alive.
Nyx who was abandoned as a baby in the swamps quickly finds out the world she knew is drastically different. With the help of a forshaken prince, Kanthe and her childhood friend Jace she must dodge the King's forces as they seek to understand the visions she been having and what Moon Fall really is.
The story starts out slow estblashing the world and by the middle the pace really begins to pick up, as all of the POV characters converge upon eachother.
While I enjoyed many of the characters, Nyx mostly many others felt a little weak in terms of writing. However as mentioned earlier the world building is excellent and makes up for this flaw.
The other thing I had some issues with was the random times the author seemed a little fixated on the nakedness of a woman's body. It didn't ruin the book or anything just felt really unnecessary for the over all book.
I plan on picking up book 2 and look forward to reading it. I give this a 7/10 over all.
Humorous
This series has actually been a pretty fun read. I have found both books to be amazing funny but the second book took things up a noch. I look forward to book 3, which judging by the end might be forth coming.
Alliance Armada continues the war against the Adjudicators, unlike the previous trilogies however, the Alliance quickly gain an advantage over their foes. This book was as fun to read as the rest of the series, and continues to expand the universe its set in a postive way.
This book focuses mostly on the battle in the Persia system and was an excellent end to the trilogy. It was nice to see McGowan finally get some much needed character growth, though it did feel a bit sudden.
I also would like to see some of the other characters get more attention, like Wang. All in all though this was a great read.
Fun, but over the top
The story was a pretty fun read, but the story based in reality was a bit much in my opinion. Worth reading though and the action was pretty well written.
Pretty fun adventure into a whole new world. While I do love litrpgs, the unneeded stat dumps do get annoying when there are multiple level-ups.
Great female MC, uses her fists and kicks for combat rather than weapons and pretty impressive healing abilities. She does power level through the book pretty quickly however I do look forward to book 2
This was a fun fairy tale through 1920s Mexico and based off of Maya Mythology While I found the story to be a bit predictable, it was still a fun read.
Jason has finally left Earth and brings about the long awaited monster surge. Over all the book was enjoyable, but Jason struggles to get out of his own way at times.
Book six ends the Earth Arc and storyline for now. I did greatly enjoy the book however Jason does feel far to powerful at his “level” compared to what he's facing off against, why not just make him gold level at this point?
Only other gripe I have is that no one else from Earth joined Jason and Farrah back to Pallimustus at all, made the last three books seemed far less important and just really underwhelming tool to bring Farrah back all together.
However, Jason does through a ton of character growth and the reasons everyone stand beyond made absolute sense. Overall a great read.
Great continuation of book 1 and I enjoyed how much the characters have grown over the coruse of each restart. The twist at the end about how the time loop work was also fantastic imo.
Book 5 does pick up where book 4 ends, however I found that the story had a much better pace. Jason also suffers some tragies due to his attitude and trying to keep information from people overall. Excellent story and I look forward to book 6!
Perhaps it was Andrea Parsneau's performance from the audio version that really sold me on the story. I was surprised by the Wandering Inn, had no idea what to expect when I first started. What I was greated with was a slice of life novel as a young woman attempts to coop and adjust to life in a new world. She deals with being the only human in the area she finds herself and ultimately having to kill in self defense. The characters all grow over time and each one stands out on their own. This book had me laughing and happy at parts, and crying and sad at others. If I didn't have a family or children I doubt I would have put the book down at all.
Andrea's narration however, is really what pulled me in. Her range of voices is crazy and each character had their own, even down to the different Gnolls, Drakes and other races Erin encounters in her new life.
Finally caught up with this series. Each book has simply been better than the last. Has Lindon become too powerful for his own good, or will he be able to change things permanently for Cradle. Can't wait for book 12!
Mother of Learning was a great, fun read taking us through a time loop as the main character relives the same month over and over again. He uses the opportunity to his advantage as he looks for a way to end the time loop.
Really am looking forward to book 2.
First the negative, which was mostly at the beginning. Much like in book 2 were the book started off on talking about the 2016 American election, book 5 touches poorly on soical issues that probably shouldn't have been brought up. King Flos wishes to learn more about Earth. Hilter is brought up, and the twins are unable to explain why Hitler was truely an evil man and not one to be admired. Similarly a few chatpers later slavery is brought up, and the brother is unable to explain why its evil and how its different than prisons on Earth. These two subjects within the books were poorly represted and to be honest I almost dropped the book as a result. I feel with topics such as these need to be handled with much more care and respect or simply leave the debates out.
I stuck with the book, and it was worth the slog at the beginning. Laken and the town of Riverfarm has grown on me quite a bit. Reading Geneva's chapters was worth the book all on its own. A few events are moving together around Liscor for Erin and Co and I cannot wait for book 6.
Tomorrow, Tomorrow and Tomorrow takes you on an excellent journey through the lives of three excellent friends as they build a company in the rapidly growing video game industry. Each of them have their own unique challenges that ultimately tests their friendship with each other. The book explores true friendship, overcoming loss, and dealing with people's negative traits while celebrating successes.
This book was a decent continution of He Who Fights Monsters. However there was a lot of problems. Seeing Jason return to Earth was fun and the moments he deals with his PTSD were fantastic. However, most of the book was just arguing with people without ever really explaining a thing, other parts were just pure power flexing by Jason.
I look forward to book 5 however as book 4 ended on a good note. I would love to see how Jason's family prepares for magic arriving on Earth.
Ghostwater is probably the best so far of the Cradle series. Liden, Orthos and Little Blue are trapped in a pocket dimension full of treasures and dangers of all kinds. If they can survive however it can greatly boost their advancement. Outside Mercy and Yerin must navigate the dangerous factions as they try to advance themselves and find another way inside the Ghostwater to save their friend.
Pretty well written and the new characters introduced are a wonderful addition thus far.
When I first started Cradle, I honestly felt it was a very good series but might be a little overhyped. I read books 1-5 and kind of stopped for a while. About a month ago, I started reading book 6 and just sprinted through book 10. I couldn't stop thinking about the characters and everything that was happening. The stakes just kept getting higher and higher, and I can't wait to start book 11.
This is my first time reading any of Neil Gaiman's works. I really did enjoy the book Neil's ability to describe everything is great and putting yourself in thr moment like you were truly there. What I struggled with is just the story itself, which really didn't pick up until towards the end. I just didn't think the story flowed all too well at points and the book fell a little flat.
Still would recommend the book, and will be reading Neverwhere next personally.
I had no idea what I would read back when I originally picked this book up. This book quickly became a favorite of mine as everything about it was fantastic. Political intrigue, mysteries, a realistic look at living in space, excellent written combat and characters that were real and different from one another. I'd argue that reading this was more of an experience than anything else.
If you're a fan of sci-fi, or really well written books pick this one up.
This was a fantastic foray into sci-fi that deals with political intrigue. The two cultures that we experience were different enough thst they truly did feel alien to each despite being human. I loom forward to the next book.
Like many my age, I had first read this in middle school. Many parts of the book stuck with me all through the years. A society ruled by “properness” and assigns careers based off of your childhood. Along with the memory of the dying soldier, the realization of what “release” really was, and what family and love mean to people.
This is the first time I have reread the book in 20 years, and the Giver still feels like a powerful message. I think many should listen to.
Books 1-3 of cradle were fun, great reads in their own rights. But Book 4 Skysworn things begin to take off. We start to understand the true goals of a number of characters and with each of the first four books the world is truly coming alive.
Travis Baldree's performance so far is this series is also top notched.
