My first Mark Lawerence book, and I really liked the setup and premise for this series. His prose was very good, and the character and world building pulled me into this world. I look forward to reading the rest of this trilogy, and plan to check some of his other books.
Upon reflection, upgraded from 4.5 to a full 5 stars. I really, really, really liked this book!
Excellent follow up to the Justice of Kings. This series has been a great mixture of fantasy, legal drama, politics, and the philosphy of how an empire conducts justice. Can't wait for the final book of this trilogy!
3.5 Stars. Story had tons of potential and I feel it just fell short. Ivy, the main protagonist, does some things that felt out of character early on, probably because it was necessary to advance the plot, but the book was not very long, so I feel like some extra story keeping in character and advancing the story would have taken this from a good book to a great one.
A quick, short read that touches on the occult just a bit, with just a tease of mystery. Good, not great, but an enjoyable read.
Short stories are typically not my cup of tea, but these were very good. While not necessary to read for the Sun Eater Saga, they do provide nice backgrounds for the politics of the Empire, the devastation of the war, and they flesh out some of the minor characters.
Another amazing chapter in the epic sci fi masterpiece.
The prose, the characters, the plot, the battles....and the emotions. Carried over from Kingdoms of Death, the story continues at break neck pace. Different, but dark in its own way, we see the toils of war and the toil it takes on a man.
Started this and could not put it down. Cannot wait for Disquiet Gods...Book 6 of the Sun Eater.

Good 1st person story told through a “podcast”. Had a nice blend of supernatural, mystery, and was a bit creepy at times.
A delightful mystery/spy thriller. WWII England, what more could you ask for? A quick read, but with good plot, dialogue. Gonna have to read the rest of the series now!
Quick short stories that help flesh out the universe, including one with Hadrian in the arena.
Not a big novella/short story fan, but as background for a grander, epic series, I enjoyed these and think that they enhance the Sun Eater experience.
This book will haunt you. Simply amazing, yet dark, and violent.
A brillant masterpiece of science fiction Fantastic prose, dialogue....an amazing plot with some dark twists. Characters that you know and love, and a surprise or three thrown in.
While I would rate Demon in White my favorite of the series so far, this part of the story is a close second, The quality of this series is amazing and it is vastly, vastly underated.

Asian Godfather Mafia story with fantasy elements. Spectacular, thrilling read and a great start to a trilogy of books!
Wow.
Stuck the landing.
Such a fantastic finale of what can only be called an epic story. Such a fantastic world, an large amazing cast of characters, a plot that ebbs and flows with action, politics, drama, and the human experience.
This is easily one of the finest series I have ever read, and it deserves a place among the all time greats.

Mystery, spies, and WWII, with just a touch of heist thrown in for good measure. A delightful quick read that is a great pallette cleansor between epic novels.
Throughly enjoying the series!
Excellent novella. This universe continues to amaze. Great story and shines the light on a secondary character from his first book, and shows him at a deeper level that you can relate too, while having an action packed sci-fi story that shows an interesting backdrop to this universe.
Pretty good for a first novel. I had read his Will of The Many earlier this year, and that book was 5 stars, but I can see the growth between this book and that one.
A good start to this trilogy and I expected each book to get better. I am interested in where the story goes. I did see the twist at the end coming a mile away, but it was executed well. Book had a slow patch in the middle, but picked up pace towards the end and had a satisfying conclusion, while still setting up the next phase of the story.
Epic ending to an epic tale. Fantastic plot, breakneck speed...yet pauses long enough for you to catch your breath and look at the pieces on the chessboard. A masterpiece of organized crime drama, fantasy, and family.
One of the greatest mysteries ever written. Poirot at the height of his powers and genius. A classic by any measure and a pure joy to read. 5 stars!
An amazing biography of an amazing man....a patriot, a scientist, a philosopher. The world might not ever see a man like him again.
5 stars.
Epic in scope, with a broad universe, Fanstatic world building and character development. Closest book I have ever read to the original Dune–mix of politics, science and religion. Highly recommended.
4.75 stars.
Brillant sequel. Does not suffer at all the “middle book syndrome” that some trilogies do.
Continues to build upon the fantastic world. Great character development, and a thrill ride from beginning to end–yet it still pauses enough to breath and let the characters shine through.
Looking forward to the final book!
