I was really not as impressed with this as I thought I'd be. It picked up toward the end but it moved a lot slower than I had anticipated.
As I expected, I now desperately want to take a vacation to Ireland. While the structure of this book started to annoy me (one chapter of character development, one chapter of storytelling, repeat for 600 pages), I really enjoyed the content of it. I liked learning about the history and mythology of Ireland, and I enjoyed the characters and their stories. I'm pretty dense and didn't see the end coming, but I imagine most people would figure it out long before the end of the book. It seemed obvious once I finished it. I really liked this, which I didn't expect.
DNF at 20%, whoever gave this 5 stars is lying. I made my friends tell me how it ends and it affirmed my decision to quit.
Although slow-going and sometimes dry, this was shockingly informative. I've already learned a lot and started applying the knowledge - to my benefit!
Meh. I felt like the series-long storylines were tidied up too easily, and that a large portion of this book was aimed at setting up for her new series. I like this universe but I'm done for now.
Yeah, I didn't love this so much. It was random and odd, but not in an endearingly Vonnegutian way.
Oh, ok, it only took me three months to read this. The book was good, I've just been too tired and kept going to sleep instead of reading. My only criticism is that I didn't like the way this whole story resolved in like the last 6 pages.
At times I worried it was going a little Twilight, but overall this was a very interesting series that combined supernatural beings with history, science, alchemy, mythology, and genetics. I learned a lot!
I did not really like this book but I am proud of myself for finishing it. I do not care about cathedral-building, I didn't find it to be an epic romance, and I hated every character. But hooray! I am done!
This was the 13th book in this series, and I have been reading them off and on for the past four years. There is one more book to come out, I think later this year?, and every book has been leading up to it. The original author, Robert Jordan, died a few years ago. I have to be honest - his ghost writer is a FAR better writer. I have loved the two he's written more than the previous 11. This one was the best of the series so far. I'm glad I pushed through :-) It's been worth it!
This was such a nice way to tie up the series. It brought back literally every single possible person, villain, mode of travel, location, monster, etc. I'm sad it's over.
This was nowhere near as exciting as it should have been. It was actually kind of tedious.
I wish Mary Roach and I were best friends. She picks topics like “space” or “war” or “sex” and then writes about the most bizarre subtopics. I just love it. Some topics addressed in this book include genital reconstruction, shark attacks, and diarrhea.
I was only going to give this three stars, but then I got to that scene when that thing happens near the end, and I gently sobbed for the next hour as I stayed up late to finish the book. Four stars.
Stayed up til 3:30 AM to finish it. Fucked me up a little. I was reading it at the gym and had to stop because I started crying. I had a lot of feelings about this book.
It sounds more complicated than it is. This is a really neat sci-fi book that still resonates despite having been written in the early years of the internet. Short, cool, and interesting... but you have to make it past the first chapter!
