This book, which I read as part of The Grand Stephen King Experiment at TannerWillbanks.com, was brutal. Perhaps it is because he was writing as Richard Bachman or perhaps it was just because he was feeling extremely dark that year but whatever it was Stephen King wrote a bleak, depressing little novel here. While I ultimately enjoyed the book, it was rough to slog through it.
AJ Mendez Brooks is a true badass. Even if I wasn't a huge professional wrestling fan, I truly think that I would enjoy this book and admire the woman who embraces “crazy” as a part of her identity.
I've always been a bit of a comedy fan, and I grew up watching VHS tapes of Martin's early movies, so it was a foregone conclusion that I was probably going to enjoy this book. That being said, I was amazed at how riveted I found myself by the anecdotes and the writing in general. I highly recommend this book.
While I've been a big fan of several of the adaptations of Hornby's work over the years, I have to admit that I've not actually enjoyed most of the stuff I've read that he's written. This was another book that underwhelmed me based on the hype for it.
