A Call to Conscience

A Call to Conscience

The Landmark Speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I have heard the famous Dream speech given by King Jr several times over the years. I am still moved spiritually and emotionally by that speech. When I had the opportunity to borrow the audio for this book, I jumped on it. In short, I could listen to this man peach every day.

King Jr is known for his work as a civil rights leader, but he was a minister of the gospel of Jesus first. Or, perhaps, that was an outgrowth of Jesus' calling in his life to spread the message of His love both in word and in action.

One sermon that struck me focused on Jesus' teaching about loving our enemies. This wasn't just theology, this was life changing love challenging and inviting us to live life as a citizen of heaven while still here on earth.

King Jr had a gift for bringing an understanding of God's love and concern for the poor and disadvantaged. He brought focus into sharp focus how God desires his people to join in carrying for these people, again word and action.

The audio was a collection of recordings of King Jr giving these speeches. The power of his delivery is amazing. He was a brilliant thinker with a broad education, but those were tools he used to touch hearts and minds with the reality of God's love.

Alas, there are those in the world who cannot bear to see God's image on earth. I would like to reflect God's love in this world, even at a fraction of the way King Jr did. He was not perfect, but I have no doubt he was God's man. I should like to look him up in the new world.
