Every once in awhile I get book recommendations from people who share a similar taste for fiction as I do, and I am always leery because it seems I never like the book as much as they did. This title is the exact opposite. I have had people warning me off this book for months. And Voila! I loved it.
I felt that Calhoun created a very believable world with strict parameters that made sense. I thought the pace never let up. I liked almost all of the characters (some more than others, but hey) and cared about what happened to each. I never felt like the story bogged down or had draggy spots. Nope. I read it in two sittings (last night and today). It reminded me of The Road (but much less gruesome). At several points it could have gone the gruesome road, and slowly tiptoed back away. That was fine by me. The imagery lives in this novel was more than enough for me (a girl in an owl mask, watching; an insomniac driving a truck full of sheep, aqueducts that flow with deep water but kill those who swam in them). It's all there, and I appreciated it.
I give it four stars for the storytelling, the constant tension-filled pace, and interesting characters. Do I need a sequel? No. Would I read one? Yes.
