This novel is about Cora, a rewriter of film scripts (she's called in to give the final polish). She has a close, sister-brother type of relationship with her writing partner, Bud; and an ultimately unsuccessful relationship with a lawyer, Ray, who loves her but can't cope with her. Together, they look after her English friend William in his last days (he dies of AIDS). Then they split up; and she finds out that she's pregnant. She helps her mother to take her senile grandfather on a long train journey back to his home town. Finally, she has the baby.Cora seems tougher than Dinah (protagonist of [b:Surrender the Pink 629170 Surrender the Pink Carrie Fisher https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1297813116l/629170.SX50.jpg 341868]) but not as lively as Suzanne (protagonist of [b:Postcards from the Edge 306010 Postcards from the Edge Carrie Fisher https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1173580480l/306010.SY75.jpg 2890349]). I suppose this is what age does to people.
