I loved this book. Loved it. At times, I wondered how everyone could stay so happy while such horrible things were happening to them but that is part of the charm. This is an old fashioned “tale” in which the child narrator is smarter than the adults around her, and the setting is a character itself. I have loved Polly Horvath's work since The Canning Season (still one of my all time faves). So I glad I picked this one up.
