I want to rate this higher than a 3, but just under a 4. So, 3.85 would work. Here's why: it's a great story, a good novel, and Schindler keeps the tension so tight, I thought I might break at some points. Feral, sadly, suffers from a lack of editing. There are just too many creepy...hallucinations. It just happens over and over again. So many flashbacks to Chicago, so many scenes with Claire trapped in another world and the other characters screaming at her and shaking her. The story is easily 90 pages too long and I felt like I read the same scenes over and over again. Rich is the too perfect male savior character.
Here are my written notes while reading:
dialog- unrealistic. No one talks like this
hilltoppers?
tension–strong!
unreliable narrator?
Guess- everyone in town is a cat...
Why is anyone friends with Claire? She's like Ally Sheedy in The Breakfast Club.
Book is way too long, repeating itself
Why do female narrators never tell anyone else what is going on? Why?
What is the purpose of Rich?
So, there you have it. Is it a good book? Yes. Is it too long? Yes.
