Gossip Girl is the first in the book series of the same name and follows the lives of several wealthy high-school students living on the Upper East Side of New York. In this first novel, Serena van der Woodsen has returned from boarding school and is causing all sorts of chaos. Her best friend, Blair, learns that Serena has slept with her boyfriend Nate, and Serena has trouble making new friends. The story is interspersed with postings from a fictional website called “Gossip Girl” where rumors are spread about the main characters by an anonymous journalist.
Gossip Girl is a frequently challenged book, and it's easy to see why. The characters have sex, get drunk, get high, and engage in all sorts of risky behavior as though it's not a big deal. It can be hard to relate to the characters since they have such an extraordinary amount of money and frequently attend socialite parties. This book can be an interesting study, though, in how the internet has become so interwoven into our lives. The mysterious “Gossip Girl” writes amusing and true anecdotes about our characters.
