Those 4 pages of repeated phrase was some David Byrne singing Once in a Lifetime by Talking Heads bullshit.
Iain Reid is a fucking genius and such a great author, y'all just dumb.
Seriously I can't even explain how much I enjoyed the book. But I think “enjoy” is a wrong word because I was super anxious the entire time. And it was worth it. Every second of it.
I will never be able to forget this book
It's perfect.
what a creepy creepy book...did not see that ending coming but glad I read it, loved how it built up and then bam in your face creeped out lol. definitely recommend and hang in there if you feel its really slow at first i promise its worth it.
“But it's the reading just for the sake of it that I find irritating. Jake will read anything - a newspaper, a magazine, a cereal box, a crappy flyer, a take-out menu, anything.”
A strange little novel that got under my skin and creeped me out. I worked out where we were going towards the end but that didn't matter, I couldn't stop it and I couldn't put it down.
I liked the mix between the present, the twisted mind and a memory, however, I couldn't enjoy it too much, the talk in the car seemed eternal and heavy, the plot twist was too slow for me, I was already losing interest , but manages to get it back pretty well in the end. Heavy for those who are not used to reading this type of terror, silent and slow.
Want to read a book that fills you with dread through every single page? This book came highly recommended as a gripping thriller, but I knew nothing more than that going into it. And honestly, I think that's how everyone should go into this. Stay away from the plot synopsis and just let the impending doom wash over you. It's a quick read, mainly because you don't want to put it down until you know what is happening.
Seriously, just read it.
What in the fing f did I just read. What happened in this book ? What didn't happen ? Is it all just a mystery wrapped in an enigma? The narrator remains unnamed, but does she? She. He. We. Me. This guy must have been schizophrenic. Time was talked about as being so important, not wasted. But this storyline was non linear. It was theoretical. It was ethereal but it was concrete. This was smoke and mirrors. Some bullshit? Maybe. But man will it stick with me like an unpleasant scar. Creepy and eerie. Wish there was more, but also don't. 3.5⭐️/5
First Iain Reid book, blew my mind away. Definitely reading everything by this author ever.
What I enjoyed most about the novel was the way it gets under your skin. One second it has scenes you relate to, the next it tries to creep you out, while in the back of your mind you are trying to put the entire story together. A quick and easy thriller that has a great journey and a great ending.
I don't know what to think, the first part was actually really boring. But then it picked up and my heart racing but I was so confused. There were so many pieces that didn't feel like they were leading to anything. And I didn't understand the ending at all until I read other people's reviews. I think this book went over my head a little and I didn't appreciate it as much as I wish I would have. I know you're supposed to reread it or something? So maybe I'll try that and I'll get it more, but also who has the time?
I really enjoyed this, even after watching the film adaptation. I knew where it was going but I still enjoyed the telling.
Post-modern philosophical horror. Completely different from but with a vibe similar to Under the Skin.
“Sometimes a thought is closer to truth, to reality, than an action. You can say anything, you can do anything, but you can't fake a thought.”
I don't even know what to say about this book. It was a gripping, mess-with-your-mind kind of read (which I love) but I wanted something a tad different for an ending. This would be a great Book Club pick though as there is definitely a lot to discuss!
Well. This completely lived up to the hype it gets from the book community. Whoo, my heart is still pounding.
I find myself itching to reread it, or sections of it. I am now off to fall down the internet hole that exists just to discuss this book.
No spoilers here. It is awesome. Go in cold.
Wow.
I'm not even sure how to review this book.
It is unsettling from the very first page. But the thing is, you can't quite figure out why. And that just makes the whole thing even more unsettling.
If you like horror, you'll likely find it to be a captivating read. It's not enjoyable. It's not fun. But I could not put it down. I'll contemplate it for awhile. Enjoying isn't the right word- but it's whatever that feeling you get from a good horror movie is.
From a writing standpoint, there's some really interesting conversations to be had about cultivating an exacting mood in a story from the very first page.
