The book was a riveting read from start to finish. Its fast-paced narrative kept me on the edge of my seat, with beautifully crafted descriptions that painted vivid scenes in my mind. The story was also deeply moving, evoking a profound sense of heartbreak as the characters navigated their trials and tribulations. The author has done a masterful job of intertwining excitement with a touch of melancholy, making this book an unforgettable experience. It's a must-read for those who appreciate a story that can make your pulse race while also tugging at your heartstrings.
I have so many problems with this book. From character behavior, to overuse of the miscommunication trophe (even tho mind talking is a thing?), to inconsistent storylines to straight up plot holes. All my friends know and I don't want to waste my breath hashing it out here (because that in itself would be a novel).
TLDR: first one- amazing, this one? Just ok. Loved the secondary characters more than the primary. Would I continue with the series? Yes. Is it my favorite? Not even close.
Dragons are cool tho.
I am heartbroken to report that I did not love this one as much as I did the first one.
It didn't read the same. It was much more of a drag for me to try to get through and it took me way longer to finish.
I found myself getting so angry at Violet and Xaden throughout this book and I was just yelling at them HOW FUCKING HARD IS IT TOO COMMUNICATE?? You keep having the same fucking fight about how he isn't telling you things, and she isn't asking. And then they fuck and it's all better. This book made them so toxic. And Xaden didn't even seem like the same person! The entirety of the first book was how he trusted her to take care of herself and he believed in her and this one undid all of that with how protective he became of her. It was beyond annoying.
I did cry again because I still love these characters so much and their pain also caused me pain. Theory:
I think Violet's dad is involved with the Venin and that's why none of them are allowed to kill her. but I will definitely be finding out if I'm right because I'm still going to be reading Onyx Storm as soon as I can get my grubby little hands on a copy.
I mean, you wanna keep reading to see what happens, but a lot of this book is also just watching a train wreck. It's fine, I guess.
Rebecca Yarros absolutely delivered with Iron Flame. If you thought Fourth Wing was intense, buckle up, because this sequel takes everything up a notch. The stakes are higher, the twists hit harder, and the characters? Even more badass. It's the kind of sequel that keeps you on edge and makes you yell at the book (in a good way). Fast-paced, fierce, and downright addictive – If I wasn't obsessed before, I'm officially obsessed now.
Overall I was underwhelmed with this second installment of the Fourthwing series.
TLDR: First 300 pages I'd give a 2... maybe....I hated it. After that I remembered why I love these books.
The first book had such great pacing, strong character development, and an interesting plot that kept me hooked the whole time. Ironflame however did not live up to the hype. The characters didn't feel the same at all, and I understand major events happened that would cause change but for their very core to not even be there still is wild. The first 300 pages of the book felt like a slog, it was painful to get through. After that though things picked up and I honestly thoroughly enjoyed the book again. The characters reemerged and the action and pacing picked up. The plot felt meaningful and it reminded me why I liked this series in the first place.
That took a turn I did not see coming. Rebecca Yarros is really good at beginnings and endings, but really struggles with the middle.
Most confusing and convoluted conflict I've ever read in a fantasy novel ever. Too many elements, too many characters. It was hard to care about the stakes and death when I just had no fucking clue what was going on. This felt like it was two books put into one. Never in my LIFE has a 600 page book felt this long. What I would do to get the 17 hours back I low-key wasted on this.
