parents were killed in a house fire
and he and his sister have been sent
to live separately with new parents.
Lonnie's teacher is showing the class
how to write poetry and Lonnie is
loving it; the entire book is written
as a series of poems, with Lonnie
intermingling poems about his difficult
life with his dreams of being back
together with his sister.
