The Gambler is a short novel about a tutor for the children of a previously wealthy Russian General.
I especially liked the multilayered characters and how imperfect they are.
Dostoevsky, being a gambling addict himself, manages very skillfully to convey the anxiety and excitement involved in gambling.
My expectations might have been somewhat off, and I find the story behind the book (which was written to settle gambling debts) more interesting.
