I had fallen in love with The Summer that Melted Everything, and was ecstatic to try another one of McDaniel's books. However, I found myself unable to finish; this book needs some serious trigger warnings attached to it.
A well-written and captivating story, On the Savage Side surprised me with some of the content within. SpoilerThe themes are harsh, and unforgiving; child abuse, drug use, relapse, sexual assault, torture, and pedophilia are only some of the topics that are dug into extensively. I made it only 60% of the way through before I found everything to be too much.
McDaniel is clearly a talented author, and I will continue to read her books. I just hope that, in the future, her publishers note any triggering topics the books contain.
