Why?

I'm kind of funny when it comes to romance mixed with other genres. If I'm reading a fantasy romance, I want dense, lush descriptions and a bit of romance. If I'm reading a romance fantasy, I want a romance in a fantasy world.

When I started this book, I thought it was a romance fantasy, but after the second chapter, which was all world building with absolutely no dialogue, I changed my mind and decided it was a fantasy romance. So I excitedly settled into the book. Only to be slapped with an explicit sex scene.

Now, if this were a romance fantasy, I'd be upset that one half of our couple was having sex with someone other than his love interest. I might have forgiven it if the scene was fade to black. If this were a fantasy romance, I would MUCH prefer not having my fantasy cluttered up with unneeded and unwanted sex scenes. Though I definitely could have forgiven it if it was a fade to black scene.

Add that to “You will give yourself to me gladly, and I will possess you and all that is yours as the new heart of my hoard.” that I was NEVER able to get over and this is just definitely not the book for me right now. (Small - very small - possibility that I might try rereading this at a later date.)

Also... gay women are sapphires and gay men are rubies. I mean... I can almost understand the sapphires because when I first saw it, my mind linked it to Sapphic - but where do the rubies come from?
