Published in 1979, this book is about 60/40 text and sketches.
The sketches (by AJ Peake) are excellent ink sketches, mostly of buildings, but some landscapes are very good.

The text is a basic history woven around the buildings which feature in the sketches. If is fairly dry, with the basics covered - population, religions, exports, the German rule (1900-14, the New Zealand rule (1914-62), and Samoan independence (1962), the Royal families, fishing, Robert Louis Stevenson and his time in Samoa, Somerset Maugham and his time in Samoa, and other topics.

Only a short book, but an interesting way to pass an hour or so.

3 stars.
