I thought i would love this book. I was so wrong.
I didn't like any character and the killer... was so obvious.
I've never read a book like this before.
It is the most uncomfortable book I've ever read. It leaves you feeling sticky and itchy and makes you want to tear the pages out.
I think it takes great skill to write a book this messed up. So I can't help but think highly of it.
also, I really liked the ending. That's usually what lets me down but this was tied together sufficiently well.
Precise rating: 3.5 ⭐
I liked the story. I'm ambivalent about the ending, but I don't hate it. I really didn't like the characters, though. The problems the people in this book have are too extreme for me to relate to any of them. Also, the vulgarity in this book felt very forced to me. Maybe Flynn wanted to get some point across, but to me it just seemed unnatural.
Still, I didn't feel like my time was wasted with this book, I just hoped for something else.
this book was quite possibly the darkest book I've ever read, and yet it was incredibly fascinating the entire way through, it was like I couldn't put it down. I found the writing style the most enticing piece of it, and I would be interested to read more books by this author with maybe more light? humor? I'm not entirely sure if that's something this author has in their catalog, but the writing style was so incredible to me, I stuck it out through the dark and the sad and the depressing.
It's hard to believe this was her first novel, the writing is just so well crafted. By the end of the book I felt like I'd been through the mill with the characters, and yet she managed to do that in just over 300 pages! Yes, it's dark and chilling, and down right disturbing at times, but that's what it's meant to be. Enjoy it for what it is - a very dark, psychological thriller.
I made a big mistake and read this book as I was also watching the Miniseries on TV. Kept picturing the actors in the TV series as I read the book! This was a good book & there are some strange characters! A bit of a surprise ending for me! If you like mysteries with great characters read this!

Somewhere in between 3 and 4 stars, it was readable but none of the main characters were likeable.
After so many times of having to restart this one I have to say that twist at the end was pretty good. I thought the story could have been shorter and dragged a lot but this was a good quick read to listen to get out of this major reading slump that I'm in.
In an effort to be brief, I will state two main characteristics about this story. First, the storyline was sufficient. Second, the characters were fantastic. Without such dynamic personalities, this story would not have been worth three stars.
The entire time I was reading I just wanted to get to the end. I was solely interested in who the killer was and the other details seemed to drag. The characters were so unlikable, even the narrator; I just wanted some redeeming qualities. The ending was good tho.
Had to go back and downgrade it to a 1 star cause after thinking about it, the writing seemed to romanticize cutting and thinking back on the story made me nauseous and not in a good murder mystery way.
This Family isn't nuclear not Toxic but it is creepy and disgusting at 1000 ways.. Would never turn these pages again. Like Who tf kills their own daughter and tries to justify the same.
This book is very well written in terms of dialogue and character, as well as atmosphere, but I saw the ending coming 1/5 of the way through.
It was super dark and interesting to read. I definitely couldn't put it down at some parts! But I'm a bit disappointed in the ending because I guessed it from the beginning.
incredibly fucked up but in a beautiful way. gillian flynn i will be charging you for my therapy bill
This was a change of pace from what I've been reading. Dark and intense. There are some places I thought dragged on a bit, but overall the pace was good.
Camille is an interesting character. Tortured by the loss of her sister and lack of love and emotion from her mother, she turns to torturing herself. It was hard to read some parts of her story.
Amma is a whirlwind. She certainly knows how to play both sides and get what she wants with cruelty and honey
