A whirlpool so insidious and horrible that you don't know you're in it's grasp until you're under the surface already.
Easily the scariest and most horrific haunted house story I've encountered. It deserves a resurgence in popularity. This is why I read horror fiction - human stories, with layers of terror and irony that creep up on you. The Shining by way of Steel Magnolias.
