This is a book about making decisions - a tough topic to tackle. More specifically, this book is about creating space in your mind, your heart, and your soul to hear from God about the decisions you make, and who you are regardless of those decisions. The dedication spoke directly to me: for anyone who has ever made a pro/con list in the middle of the night. That's me to a T. Each chapter ends with a prayer and a practical step to take- small choices that help you clear the mental clutter, refocus on the Lord, and create the space to do the next right thing.
One way I'd describe this book is “practical but not prescriptive.” What I mean by that is this book is not a step-by-step guide to making that decision you're in the middle of making. It does give plenty of practical tips, but the author never claims that she has the “proven method” to make the right decisions all the time. Her voice is compelling and challenging, but never authoritarian. In fact, I was struck by the compassion with which she shared the things she has learned along the way. I greatly appreciated the prayers at the end of each chapter, and I will be putting her tips into practice in my own life going forward. This is one of my favorite books I've read so far this year, and I cannot recommend it highly enough!
I received a copy of The Next Right Thing from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
