I originally began The Pleasures of Reading in an Age of Distraction because I wanted to find quotes about reading to use to help other people get into reading books again. I am happy to report that I found that and much more. This text not only makes an argument for reading, but for different kinds of reading, such as reading for pleasure, reading for information, and reading for enhancement. Then, the text makes an argument for skimming a text, which is not something that one sees every day. Then, most surprisingly, this texts makes an argument for reading books for mere pleasure, without the need to justify the book's greatness. This fact, as an aspiring English Major, is something that I have struggled with for some time. I feel the constant need to justify every book I have read, and Jacobs states that that does not have to be the case. Jacobs did an excellent job writing this text, and it is one that I highly recommend you get, especially if you are on the fence about reading. I give it a five out of five.
