This is a specific, and somehow general book. The author is pretty up-front about his intentions with this publication - it is to express his beliefs, those of various people he interviewed, and to generate dialogue and further the issue of ritual scarification in South Sudan.
The writing is not excellent, it is repetitive and it lacks some finery around grammar, but I give the author the benefit of the doubt, because if I tried to express myself in a language other than my own I would probably require someone with a hell of a lot of editorial control too. And that would have made this book that bit more approachable.
Anywho, the book attempts a scientific approach, dividing itself into sections - The concept of Scarification
- The Scarification in other tribes - The Consequences of Scarification - The Scarification Views, and this contributes to the repetition in the book, as it continues to outline the same concepts under each section.
Nevertheless, it is a interesting read, and brings the various issues around scarification to the table for discussion.
