This novel does a wonderful job of exploring what it is like to live between two worlds. Joan's parents are immigrants from China who speak very little English, and when the family moves to a small town in West Virginia to start a laundry, Joan has to act as the intermediary between her parents and the people of the town; neither group understands the other. I really appreciated how the story shows not only how the family learns to navigate the town, but also how the town begins to appreciate the family and, even more so, how Joan begins to appreciate her parents.
