When I first started this book I thought I'd only end up giving it 3 stars. I didn't care for Nan and never have. She cruel for unnecessary reasons. Yes I get that she's never felt loved and what not but we've all had things that could make us like that so basically I felt like that was a bs excuse. I also didn't love Cope/Gannon when he was first introduced. The only shinning light was Major and even that wasn't too bright.
However, as the book went on I found myself being more and more into it. The story line was so compelling. Glines' really proved she could write just about anything rather it be the typical romance novels she's know for, a crime novel, suspenseful thriller or something more along the lines of 50 shades of grey. She did it all in this book. I love to see a author really push themselves past what they know they do well and she definitely did that with this book (actually the last four books of this series).
Spoilers ahead:
Ok this book is an emotional roller coaster that I wasn't prepared for. I went from slightly annoyed to pissed off to feeling sorry for Nan and Cope/Gannon to crying my eyes out over Major then back to being pissed and finally happy. Be prepared.
Nan: if you've read the previous books then you know Nan and more than likely your not a fan. She's catty and cruel all because she never had the attention or love from a parent. I still say that's not a good enough reason to act the way she did however, this book does show you how her mind works around these things. It was interesting. Then she met Cope/Gannon and became pretty obsessed with him and even gets herself pregnant just to have a piece of him.
Cope/Gannon: This dude has some issues...a lot of them. However, Nan brings something out in him that I was not expecting. Even though his love scenes were a little too 50 shades for my liking I get why Nan was attracted and wanted that in her life. He gave her something she never knew she wanted. In return she gave him something he never thought he could have.
Major: I'm kind of fond of him even though his a total man whore. He has a charm about him regardless. I thought it was kind of ridiculous that he thought he might be in love with Nan because that's just not his character. However, when he gets “killed” I cried while sitting at work only to find a few chapters later that my messed up make up was all for nothing. Then I got mad again lol.
Overall, this book is well worth the read. The characters have many layers that I wasn't expecting and the plot is loaded with twists and turns that you won't see coming. Abbi Glines proves she is one of the best in the game with this one.
