If you have no idea who Gordon Parks is this is the perfect biography to get an insight into his life and how he learned photography. It was an adventure from start to finish where he touched base on the struggles of poverty and racism in the world.
I was excited to read about Perkins Harnly - knowing there is not much about him. I started reading this and was flooded with information, but it wasn't mainly about Perkins, it was more about his friends and who he had encounters with. I wanted more about his work, which yes there is some about that, but there are pages of just information about his friends.
I wanted to really like this book - but I probably wont recommend this to anyone who wants to know about Perkins.
I enjoyed learning about Joan Mitchell. The author had was very detailed on the accounts of Joan's life and the relationships of not only partners, but friends as well. I will say that the author used language that just didn't flow very well, for example just throwing in synonyms that just seems she wanted to use a big word in the sentence.
The research was well done, but a lot of the information was back story to certain peoples lives that I don't think was needed to get the life story of Joan.
Overall it was a good read and if you want more information on Joan Mitchell this is a good source.
This book intrigued me just from the cover and title. I decided to just pick it up and give it a chance. Now I love learning about random cults and just interesting stuff throughout history.
I was expecting more from this book! It was very long winded and often times I ended up becoming bored within a chapter. It was a lot of over explanation of things that could have been just a paragraph instead of an entire chapter. Mind you, I did learn something from this book, I just wish it was edited a bit better so readers can actually be invested in this book.
I took me a few months to even finish it. If you have a very long road trip or some flights I suggest reading this book, otherwise just don't pick it up.
This book has a very slow build. It doesn't start to pick up until a good chunk into the novel. If you can get past the slow start, then it just doesn't stop until the final page. The author writes in a way that makes you think you might have an idea of what's going on, and then it turns the opposite direction.
Overall it was a good read, just a tough start.
This is a very interesting read, not only because of it being during WW2, but because of the women it's about. I would have never known about such intricate details of the Nazi invasion on Jersey and the lengths that people went through. If you like history, and some twists here and there I recommend this book!
This book had me hooked from the beginning. I was invested in all the characters, even the ones that didn't seem to move the story along. The way the author writes has you intrigued every chapter. I do have to say I wasn't fond of the ending and I still have some questions about it. Other than that I think if you are looking for a good thriller mystery this is your book !
Just read this book. It will have you guessing what's going to happen next. It had me glued from the beginning and I couldn't put it down!
