This was an aggravating read for several reasons, but I don't like to DNF. The story itself was bonkers. I have read many a dark romance with even morally black (not gray) MMC, but this was insane. Man confessed to being a serial killer at the end and even though she's only known him for a few days, she's fine with it... doesn't freak out in the slightest. The other times she's slept with him, she was high as a kite because he doses her with Molly he baked into cookies.
The writing itself wasn't great either. A large part of the first portion of the book had gigantic paragraphs for no reason - or maybe it's because the paragraphs had no indents of any kind that I thought they were huge paragraphs.
The initial premise was good, but this book needed some serious editing. There were grammar mistakes, swapped pronouns, parts where it swapped from first person to third person, and further into the book, there were repeated paragraphs and dialogue.
Plus at the end with the court scene - a lawsuit is a civil case that only damages can be awarded. It cannot also be a felony case where guilt is determined and a sentencing is held. That's basic information.
There was a lot of times I wanted to DNF this book, but I powered through. The errors just got worse as it went and the handful of spicy scenes left much to be desired.
I enjoyed the characters a lot along with the unique spin on the Jack Frost lore. Definitely laid some ground work for other books in the series, but likely will be a while before I continue to the others.
Overall I'd say it was an enjoyable read. The spice was meh at best. Honestly the way the MC relationship built up was nice and my favorite post of the book.
I love the FMC so much in this book. Her internal monologue for the chapters that are from her perspective made me laugh so much because it just felt so relatable.
The relationship between her and Bram does technically happen quickly, but it felt realistic due to how the long the two characters had been secretly pining for each other.
I think my one complaint was how a lot of things seemed to magically all come together at the end. Don't get me wrong, I love a happy ending, but it did feel a bit unrealistic.
Overall though, it was a fun read. Definitely spicy.
It was really hard reading this in the beginning because of how much I disliked the FMC, but as the “Scrooge” in this retelling, that's to be expected. I really loved the growth the character went through and the MMCs as well.
Genuinely, I ended up loving this book more than I expected.
I loved being able to read more about this group's story and how it progressed past the main book.
This book enthralled me as much as it enraged. You come to love the characters and then Scott Lynch just throws one punishment after another after another at them.
This was such an amazing book to kick off the new year with. MMFM romance where all the characters go through great growth and even the side characters feel really fleshed out.
On top of that, the spice was spice-ing. Loved it.
