One star for the good writing, one star for the 15% of the book I enjoyed. This story was like stranger things, saw, and ghost busters thrown into one to describe capitalism which yah I agree. The characters were bland and even though they went through hell, I didn't care for them. I ended up skipping through the last 25% of the book because the ending kept DRAGGING on and I wanted to know what the resolution would be.
Had high hopes for this highly appreciated and talked about read. I wasn't a fan of the writing style and I guess that's due to personal preferences.
1 star earned for the atmospheric read. You can walk through the town, the house, and the gruesomeness which I appreciate.
1 star earned for the cover art
The story itself felt like a rollercoaster with each peak feeling like something was about to go down. The actually climax of the story felt overdone and I was very much ready for a resolution. I ended up skimming through the last 4 chapters to get to the ending which was uneventful.
Quick read and not as dense of a memoir than I'm used to. It's heartbreaking reading about the possible painful experiences gay men, and especially black gay men go through as a means of coming into themselves and their sexuality.
Huge trigger warnings regarding SA/physical abuse so be cautious.
One star taken off for the reading experience. The story jumps back and forth often to different points in time which was difficult to follow.
This was a comfort read for me and something to get me out of a reading slump.
A wonderfully told and beautiful story of a young dyke finding who she is in this world. You really get to know Juliet in this first person perspective. She's fragile force that you quickly love and want the best for.
