#1-3 of 3 in The Lord of the Rings
1954 • 1,570 Readers • 1,178 pages • 4.5
Why this book?
Simply THE epic fantasy by which all other epics are measured.
1958 • 4 Readers • 350 pages • 5
Why this book?
"There is no simple explanation for anything important any of us do, and the human tragedy, or the human irony, consists in the necessity of living with the consequences of actions performed under the pressure of compulsions so obscure we do not and cannot understand them."
I have to admit that I heard this quote from Gord Downie way before I knew the original source of it. But I'm so glad that I sought out that source. MacLennan's prose is beautiful and deep, mature yet accessible, and full of existential depth and meaning.
#1 of 6 in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
1979 • 3,622 Readers • 215 pages • 4.2
Why this book?
This series probably did more to shape my sense of humour than anything else.
