I'm a bit disappointed in this book. I really wanted to like it as I love hiking and camping and am very interested in the AT and the PCT and other “treks” like this.. And parts of it were good, however other parts are so long winded that it's a drag to get through.
I also did not like how Bryson seems to mock other people on the trail (actually it seemed like he mocked most everyone else mentioned in the book). He took on this holier than thou attitude towards others even though he and Katz themselves were very ill prepared.
Wow, this read like a Freida McFadden book, and by that I mean I hated it, lol. But really, it was quite a lot like McFadden's The Inmate in terms of manipulation, incredibly gullible characters, and predictability. I've gotta find some better suspense/thriller books because I keep striking out.
This was a good book - the writing was okay, she was very genuine. I didn't know who Minka was before reading (did not grow up watching Friday Night Lights) - this book takes you through her traumatic life growing up and making it out. Pretty interesting and she's accomplished a lot.
Whew. No rating for memoirs but I def have mixed feelings about this one. Great writing, incredible story, but I think it was just too poetic for me which I'm not really into.
It got a little drawn out and maybe wordy in the middle. The main character is obnoxious and I think the point was to make her a bit unlikeable - if that WAS the point, the author did a great job. I couldn't stand Junie - loved to hate her but couldn't stop reading.
4.5 I put off reading this for so long because I just can't seem to get into fantasy but this was such a nice cozy read. If you like TJ Klune's House in the Cerulean Sea and Under the Whispering Door, you'll like this. Same vibes - I really liked it!
4.5 Holy crap. What a tough read but so well written. It's basically a re-telling of David Copperfield in a modern day setting - Kingsolver goes hard with the parallels between the two. It's one of those you know you're going to have a “book hangover” after reading.
No rating for memoirs, it just feels weird to do.. As someone who hasn't really watched Friends and doesn't know much about Matthew Perry, I went into this somewhat blind. I really felt for him - the book was very interesting and sad. He came across as very shallow and selfish (which he did acknowledge in the book). I could say a lot more about how he comes across (it's not great..) but I think I'll just say that the book is nothing if not honest.
3.5 it was a good, easy read, however a couple huge plot holes. What about autopsy results? They didn't match what happens in the story. Also Kate and Meredith are so oblivious and unsuspecting. Their inner monologues were so frustrating - I literally facepalmed at a certain point lol.
“Gotta save humanity and stuff”
“AMAZE AMAZE AMAZE!”
This was such a good book, just a little too sciency for me - Not sure I'm smart enough for it. Funny and engaging throughout though, and I loved Rocky! Rocky jazz hands
3.5 The first half was so boring that it took me days to get through, however the 2nd half was really good. Glad I stuck it out.
4.5 The ending was so predictable but I still liked it! Mamusia drove me nuts, and now I feel bad about it after finishing the book...
I wanted to like this so badly because of all the great reviews, however I had a really hard time getting through it. Just didn't catch my interest. I think I'll give it another shot in the future.
Well I ended up binging this in 2 days. As usual for Kristin Hannah books, this was great. Such good writing - I loved this book, however maybe not as much as others I've read of hers. I was still glued to it and cried throughout
3.5, I actually ended up like this a lot more than I thought but it took about 30% of the book for anything to happen because there was so much detail going into the setting. I liked that she told from different POV's but was very clear and it was easy to follow.
