A verry nice first book from the author. An original concept of a “roman noir” set in a fantasy world that works pretty much
An ok read that delivered. I feel like it could perfectly be adapted to an american horror story season ( it has the right amount of dark humour and weirdness for it).
I think that the end was clearly visible like a mountain from the start of the story, but I liked the vibe the author has put in it
The story is captivating, very well written, the characters are pretty believable, the build-up is amazing . I'd give it 5 stars, but I find the end really far-fetched
Finally a good horror story, where the characters are well developped and credible.
How the author manages to place jump scares in the book, is amazing.
It would be perfect for a Mike Flanagan adaptation
The first book of the legendary serie.... Ok, it's really not the best, but please, hang in there, the serie gets sooooooo much better after this book
In the shadowy corners of literature, where morality blurs and characters tread the fine line between heroism and villainy, Joe Abercrombie reigns as the undisputed Lord of Darkgrim. To dub his mastery as extraordinary would be an understatement; it's a plunge into the depths of human complexity, where every character is an unapologetic, legitimate asshole, yet somehow, we find ourselves attached to their twisted narratives.
Remarkably, amidst the moral murkiness and philosophical ponderings, I struggled to pinpoint any negative aspects. Abercrombie's storytelling is a double-edged sword – it cuts deep into our emotions, leaving scars of attachment and empathy. If there's a flaw to be found, it lies not within the pages but in the inevitable reality that after nine captivating books, the time has come to bid adieu to the captivating world of the First Law. Closing the chapter on this epic saga feels like bidding farewell to old friends, a poignant reminder of the emotional investment Abercrombie's narrative demands
I have a lots of mixed feeling about this book. The author is verry good at describing horror and creating suspence. But the book, except for Bishop has absolutely no character development, no motivations are shown. I also feel that the story could have been 100 pages less, and the end, outrageously displaying a deus ex machina ( the light coming from nowhere, just killing the dark) makes me want to only give 3 starts to this book
Darcy Coates as a real talent to write easy ready yet full of suspense books.
Even if we could see the end coming big time with all the clues given, it had a nice twist at the end
I have no idea if it's a good book or a bad book, but I know for sure that it's one of the most disturbing story I've read. I wanted to read an horror story, and, man, have I been served... Just not the horror I was expecting
This book offers a captivating narrative that stands out due to its originality. The characters are well-developed, each with their own unique arcs that enhance the story. Their growth feels authentic, allowing readers to connect with their journeys on a deeper level. Overall, it's a compelling tale that combines an imaginative plot with rich character development, making it a worthwhile read
This book offers an intriguing read, showcasing the author's impressive writing style. The narrative possesses a distinctive blend of dark Tim Burton aesthetics mingled with the eerie vibes reminiscent of a Mike Myers Halloween film. This unique combination creates a captivating atmosphere that draws readers in.
However, the enjoyment of the plot is somewhat overshadowed by the characterization. Aside from Jones, the supporting characters felt flat and lacked depth, straying into realms of frustrating foolishness. While I understand that fiction often allows for exaggeration, a touch of common sense from the victims and the police would have enriched the story and made it more believable.
I must be the issue with this book, cause so many people liked it. I don't see what's so good about it . So many contradictions in the story, so many script facilities, the characters are not deep at all.
Pretty forgetable story, shallow characters. I did not felt like I was reading from stephen king at all
It's for me the best fantasy serie, and I don't say that lightly. It 4200 pages in total, but it's really worth it
This book is highly related to the dark tower. If you did not read the dark tower, I don't think you could appreciate it the same.
Anyway, even if sometimes it seems like the plot becomes really weird and the begining in really slow, characters are well written and the suspense is goodly described.
