An interesting detective/crime-type story set in the 70s, revolving around some strange occurences where people die in very violent ways (hardly any gore involved, which I appreciated).
The story builds slowly and if you're into very specific details, this book is for you. I prefer less detailed descriptions and more character building so it's good that this book also has plenty of interesting characters to take you along for the ride.
This is not really my favourite genre to read but gave it a go on my sister's recommendation and I am glad I did. A solid effort - I will look into the author's other books as well.
As a white person, this is the most important book I've ever read. If you're open and willing to truly engage, listen and learn, you will love this book. If you're not yet ready to accept discomfort and a ton of emotions that are uncomfortable, this is not for you.It has been an eye-opener to me and has answered so many questions (all of which started with ‘yes, but...' to which I had no previous answers. I started off taking notes thinking I would write down a quote here, another there but I've filled pages and pages with so much from the book, I almost copied it all down.I will continue to refer to my notes and this book for the rest of my life and am incredibly grateful to [a:Robin DiAngelo 5283261 Robin DiAngelo https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/f_50x66-6a03a5c12233c941481992b82eea8d23.png] for writing it.
Fascinating story and fascinating world... Despite a cliff-hanger ending, everything is beautifully written and the characters so well developed that I wanted to read on and on. Thankfully three more books to follow!
Absolutely loved this book! Despite it taking me a good half year to read (I had started and was clearly not ready for it yet so had to stat again a few months later), this is one of those books that slowly and kindly leads you to open your eyes to a set of habits/ingrained thoughts & emotions that you weren't aware you were carrying around with you to your detriment.
Interspersed with beautiful stories about her mother (I would've liked growing up with such a role model!!!), Ariana Huffington blends research with her and other people's experience in order to show us that there is more to life than money and power.
I liked this book so much that I actually sat down with a notebook whilst reading it and took notes and wrote down quotes. I've never felt the need to do that before but this seemed to fit.
I will be going back to this book over and over again - a true joy to read.
I had hoped for a bit more in this last book of the quartet - despite the clear links to the previous books (which I had been waiting for!), this story felt a bit more disjointed and not quite as satisfactory in the end.
I found this one slightly harder to get into as I was continuously looking for the link back to the first book. However, even on its own the characters are so believable, it was very easy to empathise with Kira and the life she was struggling to build.
The best of the four books, in my opinion. Matty completely captivated me from the start and I hungrily followed his story to the end of the book. Such a well-written story with utterly real characters - a joy to read!
