See allI remember reading this when I was about 12-13 and it's never gotten out of my head. I found a hardcover of it and decided to dive back in for the season. It was as dark as I remember and the illustrations are quite vivid. A great haunting fable.
This was a great novella. Quinto does great on the audio narration and the dialog is classic Scalzi. Loved it!
It was a good cautionary tale with conversation points that you may not think of right away after the blast comes. It was definitely packed with sad and depressing moments but also didn't stray from the realism of what this situation might entail.
You may have to suspend disbelief for Heloise's tranformation into a ‘battle general' providing motivational speeches and coordinating forces in merely a few days. Buuuuut that's easy enough to do and even with that this was a fantastic ride.
(Audiobook Review) I thought this was a good story and perhaps I would have enjoyed it if I had just read it on my own. The narrator has a strong Nigerian accent which made it a bit tricky on 2x speed and the inflection on some parts felt a little off. It was quite an odd story about being human and alien all at the same time. it was enjoyable and I will probably be reading the next in the series.
