With elements that felt familiar and unique, Szal spins an action-packed ride with a protagonizt that's isn't all anger and brawn. There's a human side to his characters that I really appreciated. Sci-fi on a asteroid city with an expansive plot that doesn't get too heavy.
3.5 stars Parts Duke Nukem meets South Park meets classic Kevin Smith. Sophomoric humor abound in this ???Battle Royale??? but with aliens. Although the redeeming factors are some toilet humor chuckles and an epilogue author interview with the characters which was pretty hilarious.
Enjoyable for the self-aware characters and sharp-tongued banter.
No this is not related to the Netflix show.
Loved it! As an aspiring musician and someone who had played the small clubs and lived for the live music scene I really felt this book. PLUS the whole ‘pandemic' angle really hit home with the current state of things and I really enjoyed it. It had just enough scifi but nothing outlandish or overbearing.

This was a really exciting and gripping image of where current technology may evolve into. It was like an exciting body-swapping Black Mirror episode!

This was a really fun and action-packed Sci-fi that held such a well developed world. There were so many great elements: action sequences, the space travel, the villain, and the weapons, and the shape-shifting berserker alien!
I just wrapped up this audiobook and after a cringe fest (in a good way) of awful things I absolutely loved it! It played all the right keys of a brutal haunting/possession/nightmare story with a spotlight on what damage can happen to young minds when mistreated. This book pulled my heartstrings out of pity, all the while seeking retribution for later actions.
The teeth though. That makes me uneasy every time. Well done!
Wow. Yeah I don???t think I???ve read anything like this but it sure as hell packed a punch. I felt like it had a Midsommar vibe in there and then phew- wtf boom splat. Triggers abound.
Great little story about life and your reflection upon it when viewed from a different lens. I snagged the audiobook from my library and the narration was great!

I really loved this story (and I don't read a TON of fantasy). I felt that I was fortunate enough to find the author's ‘pronunciation guide' before diving in an it really helped me grasp the terminology here. I really loved the ‘hints' of the origins behind these ‘spirits' and the origins of the realms and the world this all takes place in.
Points for:
-the layers of motivations and tactics and deceptions
-the worldbuilding and the layers of ‘lore' happening
-the character growth and the ‘facing your demons' literally and figuratively.
-the creatures - the flayers and Dokojin
-the darkness and the brutality
Well done!
Is there such a thing as ???Flash Bizarro???? My first experience with this author leaves me asking a lot of questions of life and stories in general. Everything had a flare of the strange or grotesque and I enjoyed it.
I love this twisted glimpses of plausible futures.
Scary, threatening, and unsettling.
It was said best in the ???Foreward??? - Fiction particularly science-fiction has a duty not only to entertain, but to cast a light on the shadowy parts of society and it???s possible future.??? Dive in.
A powerful and wholly-entertaining debut! Fear, dread, monsters and death. A adrenaline driven post-apocalyptic journey though an unknown catastrophe that surrounds you with fear of the unknown. Jurassic-park meets Pitch Black. (and almost a ‘Terran vs Zerg' matchup in there for those who get the reference.)
I really loved the pacing and the alternating timelines and POVs and the way they intersected. The mystery of the characters as we dove in with little background. The fear of the outside world as well as the fear of the minds whom you cannot crack.
I was really taken for a grin at the ending and literally laughed and clapped at the ending as i applauded the author for the surprise, the ride, and the characters.
This would make a great film as the pace and action were constant and kept me coming back.
Such a great atmospheric audiobook! See my full review video here - https://youtu.be/TXbRHI-bohI

I immesely enjoyed this audiobook for the action and humor and brutality of it all. I also enjoyed the scifi touch and the small town atmosphere. While taking place among high school students the humor is a bit crude and sophomoric which is true to the characters and I really enjoyed it.
A fantastical and dark collection of stories with a feeling of authenticity, heart, and horror. Written in Spanglish with a touch of twisted mythology akin to Gabino Iglesias.
Much like descending into a dark and musty basement this story gets darker and more frightening as you progress. Descending into discoveries that just keep getting darker and darker and doesn???t let up. I was curious, then freaked out, then appalled, then angered, then scared for the characters life and my pulse quickened towards the culmination. Very well done with the atmosphere and the subtleties throughout.
This book didn???t live up to the blurbed expectations for me. I felt as though the plot trigger in the story came way too late and by that time I was bored and skimming waiting for something meaningful to happen. Then When it did it was very abrupt and short. Then the cast of characters shifted and I wasn???t invested in this new group. I thought the main character was a decent ???Everyman??? and I do appreciate the final ???message??? of the strong, I just felt like I didn???t have a strong foundation and was being muddled around. Almost DNF but I stuck with it and enjoyed the final ???reveal??? as well.
Such a hard hitting, raw, and devastating read. I was unnerved, cautious yet eager to see where the story goes. A great selection for #WomenInHorrorMonth!
Fav quote:
???There were people who hurt others thinking others would hurt them. And then there were people who hurt others knowing would t hurt them back. The world was all comprised of people just causing hurt.???
This was an amazing and horrible horror book. Horrible in the best way that a horror book can be. It's actions are so egregious that you HAVE to find out what happens and the way that Bennett spins this tale and buid the suspense is masterful. 2 brothers purchase an old motel that their father used to run but after some renovations and some discoveries, visions, and sounds, and even secret doors start to unveil themselves.
This was a great story that keeps you guessing around every corner and doesn't let up on the pain inflicting onto the main character.
I felt that this does have many of the same steps as a horror haunting story yet the remote atmosphere and the small outskirts of lawless Texas put this in a setting familiar yet terrifying. Bennett's characters are real and their story seems real and authentic.
A great story for fans of Dark Matter or Replay! Author-narrated audiobook which was really well done. I'll be hunting down more from this author!

This was one of my anticipated reads because I LOOOVED The Border Keeper novella so much.
The Star Eater has that flare of the engrossing and mysterious. Information and explanations are not fed to the reader, you learn and things are uncovered as you go through the motions in real-time. That's something I really enjoyed about this. The world has some pretty awesome and unique elements and the magic system flowing through this world was really cool. The Haunts and the origins of them.
Audiobook review: this could have been the narrator though the way some of the dialog just didn???t gel very well. Jay was especially obnoxious and the tone for Min-wu was a bit too excitable. The story concept was pretty cool but I lost it among the different ???role??? names after they met up with the others (Supria, Corinne) and then the lore got a bit much. It turned into a litrpg or something. It was interesting but didn???t really hit on the character pieces.
An excellent and action-packed read. It was nice to see the dual timelines and the history within the world and the origin story. I was a little caught by the connection with Jen and Solal. I also enjoyed the reveal of the villian who still has been holed up within Eden and the androids he's created. Cerberus was pretty awesome too. All in all it was a good read.
This was a pretty fun haphazard space-romp. Chuck is the Luckily-unlucky ‘Earth Man' accidentally thrown into the bizarre world of ‘the rest of the universe'. As he ends up taking a courier job from the universe's most prolific mega-corps, his travels lead him to those most bizarre situations only an average-joe human can think their way out or.
There were plenty of chuckles and eye-roll jokes abound, but that was to be expected. (i mean, look at the title). So yes, if you're looking for that silly space romp with some action, aliens, anomalies, and evil greedy corporate heads, espionage and wit, there have at it!
This was a fun and humorous take on society, media, and human psychology in an unprecedented situation. What if the first colonial mission to Mars, made up of scientists and professionals were the stars of a reality television show, With all of the technological delays and non-exciting events, what happens when no one cares about the show anymore? The author dives into some behavior studies of varying personalities amongst the team. It was a fun ride and completely plausible almost. well written and well narrated, 3 stars.
