this is Wilde so obv it's witty & fun,,,but very similar to Lady Windermere's Fan (which i loved more)
‘Oh, something is there, waiting for me. Perhaps someday the revelation will burst in upon me and I will see the other side of this monumental grotesque joke. And then I'll laugh. And then I'll know what life is.'
“Like all lovers, they spoke much of themselves, as if they might thereby understand the world which made them possible.”
“I don't want to prove anything, I simply want to live; to cause no evil to anyone but myself. I have that right, haven't I?”
felt every single possible emotion while reading this. can't believe this book is real.
‘She felt very young; at the same time unspeakably aged. She sliced like a knife through everything; at the same time was outside, looking on. She had a perpetual sense, as she watched the taxi cabs, of being out, out, far out to sea and alone; she always had the feeling that it was very, very dangerous to live even one day.'
”Just because I'm so horribly conditioned to accept everybody else's values, and just because I like applause and people to rave about me, doesn't make it right. I'm ashamed of it. I'm sick of it. I'm sick of not having the courage to be an absolute nobody.”salinger stan forever <3
“Though earth and moon were goneAnd suns and universes ceased to beAnd thou wert left aloneEvery existence would exist in thee.”
feeling very empty... the way this might be my favorite classic ever??
