This is a scifi/horror story with action movie vibes. I listened to this on audible and I think that made it more enjoyable than I would have found reading it. I liked the mystery of the ship in the first half of the book. It was a little predictable but I still wanted to find out what was really going on. This was mostly action and not a lot of backstory or info on the characters. It was good enough to finish but I don't know that I care enough to read the next two books.
This is the first John Saul book I've read. This story reminded me a bit of a Michael McDowell book. No southern gothic but still the same sort of snowballing plot line. I wasn't a huge fan of the narrator for the audiobook and I think I would have liked it better had I actually read the book. Overall I liked it but it was nothing mind blowing. I would definitely read another book by Saul.
This book had potential but quickly got very repetitive. The characters spent more time saying the same things over and over about the plot instead of actual doing anything interesting.
I've seen most of the movies based on this book but I had never read the book. I decided to listen to it on audible and see how much different it was from the movies. I've never thought of this as a true story and still don't but as a fiction book it is fairly decent. A few differences from the movies but overall very familiar. A decent read.
I listened to this as an audiobook. The narrator did a great job with the different character voices and accents. Overall I liked the story. There were a lot of different characters and I felt the backstory of each of made the book drag in the middle. There was a lot of buildup before getting to the actual haunted house. By the time the ghost hunting actually happened it felt like they had talked about the same thing over and over and it was getting boring.
I had not heard of this author before reading this book and I was pleasantly surprised. I am a sucker for haunted house stories. This is about a haunted house but it's a bit of a twist on the genre. There were several quirky characters I liked. I wouldn't say it was scary and there was very little/no gore. I enjoyed the story even if it was a wee bit far fetched...but what haunted house story isn't?
This is a weird little story. A paranormal investigator interviews a woman who says her house is haunted. Is it really or is she a total nut job? The narrator for the woman's voice does an excellent job. She's incredibly rude and arrogant and not at all likable. But she is also a bit of stereotypical battered wife...only her abuser is a house. It's not an action packed story but it's definitely unusual enough that it keep me interested until the end.
Another great book by McDowell. A creepy slow burner of a story that ends with a bang. Murder, ghosts and revenge - what more do you need?
This book has a lot going for it. It was well written and the audiobook was excellent. I liked the setting, the differences of the characters and the slow burn mystery. There was a small bit of the supernatural but it wasn't the main point of the story. Definitely worth a read or better yet listen to the audiobook which was very well done.
I'm kind of on the fence about this one. I really liked Hex by the same author but wasn't as impressed with this one. I had trouble understanding one of the main characters narration. I got used to it eventually but it kind of broke the mood of the book for me. It was too jokey or something. I did like the overall plot idea and metaphor of the mountains but I felt like it kind of dragged. I'd still be willing to try another book by this author.
I listened to this on audible and I thought the narrator did a great job. I like the way Susan Hill writes...the buildup of dread. The atmosphere of the story was great but I wanted a little more backstory on dolly and what exactly she was or how she happened to be. That would bump it up to 5 stars for me.
Any story where people investigate a missing spaceship with no one left alive on board is right up my alley. This book had a bit of an Event Horizon (movie) feel. I enjoyed the creepiness of the mystery. My one compliant was that the main character was a little annoying. Her insistence that everything bad that happens to everyone is always her fault made me want to slap her. Besides that I liked this book quite a bit.
