Wasn't a bad novel but it made a better film with Cicely Tyson. It's about a family taking a trip down south to where things happen and no one is the same as they were before they left.
Got it for Christmas and read it before I read Flicking The Bic. Good book that tells the downside of crime from the detective's eyes. The mature suave Jean-Max is older and wiser in this but more arrogant in this one and gets what he has coming to him.

Phyllis was a force of nature. This was a good autobio. There is only so much you can tell and find out once a person is deceased and there was a lot to tell with only so much time and verifiable resources to discuss it. Mr. Michael did justice to Phyllis by not writing a book full of rumors, downplaying her saints or sinning, or skipping over some of her issues in later years that unfortunately led to her suicide.
Ella Fitzgerald was an extremely private person that kept her business to herself. This book is an endless list of her career schedule because that is about the only thing that was public about her.
The conclusion to Dreamgirls, which ends in 1970. Mary Wilson chronicles the downward spiral of not only Motown, but her professional and personal relationships. Doesn't tell it all but tells enough of the turbulent 1970s-1980s era of soul music.
A must read for a true look at the glory days of Motown from the eyes of one of its best vocalists.
