this story really sucked me in but the ending was so underwhelming yet simultaneously out of left field. i like mysteries that trick me but still track when i can look back at the clues i missed previously. this wasn't that, but the middle 200 pages grabbed my attention nonetheless. 3 stars!!

WOW. WOOOOOW. THIS MIGHT BE MY FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME. EVER. i loved the lead up to the ending. it was terrifying. it kept me on the edge of my seat. the imagery was scary, the scenes were unsettling. the dialogue at dinner with the parents was JUST PLAIN ODD. & the meaning at the end made it so much better. i had a sneaking suspicion as to what the title was alluding to and the ending solidified that for me. thinking of suicide as ending a relationship inside yourself is very powerful. seeing the intrusive thoughts as a constant anonymous caller akin to something from Scream... AHHHH. this was simultaneously a horrifying thriller and a beautiful allegory. in love with this book.
if i would've read this 10 years ago i would've been OBSESSED. now, it's just cute pure summer entertainment
WOW. i've never felt so transported into the world of a book. i was there with the characters trying to survive alongside cadavers and murderous foliage. a visceral heartbreaking 5 stars.
“If you knew how much anger I had in me you'd say, “Thank God she's not a man. She might destroy millions. Thank God the only person she has the power to destroy Is herself.”
sooooo close to a 5 star! a surprising, twisted and sumptuous domestic thriller in which everyone has dark secrets looming beneath the glamour. reminiscent of The Last Mrs. Parrish, one of my all time faves, and Jane Eyre (it's a modern re-telling, so.... duh).

the level of horror was great. i liked the writing style and story structure. it was extremely well done. but remind me again why a white author needs to include the n word in their books? there's no justification for it.
i've truly never read a thriller novel in this format! the audio was absolutely amazing, wonderfully produced! however, the book dragged a bit for me. i feel like many small details that were included didn't have any impact on the actual case. i also guessed the murderer correctly after about 3 chapters... sigh. another average thriller. but extra points for creative storytelling!
as olive got older throughout the book (& series), it got more difficult for me to relate to her. i still enjoyed the writing style, atmosphere and humanity that was brought to these short stories, but overall it was just good... nothing to write home about. maybe i will enjoy it more as a re-read when i'm older!
not my favorite poirot novel, but it had a fun fall vibe to it so i didn't really mind that it was predictable!
ughhhhhhh this last installment in the series dropped the ball for me. i can't decide if i enjoyed the darker themes and twists in this one or not. it was definitely a choice... and not a choice i would've predicted for pip, especially with all of the suspension of disbelief that was involved here... that's soooo not pip's style. & omg the drAMA at the end and the focus on the romance had me rolling my eyes. pip needs to get over herself in this one. i can't deny that the story was engrossing though. and the twists were shocking as always.
y'all. this is the second book in a row where i've guessed the killer within 50 pages. i don't know if it's a me problem or a book problem but i'm annoyed
pros: i cared about the MC, i felt the emotions she felt, it was frustrating and thrilling which had me turning pages
cons: THE ENDING COULDVE BEEN SO SATISFYING BUT INSTEAD IM FUMING WITH ANGER
