I'm in love with this book. It's everything so many other books have tried to be yet failed, and so much more on top of that. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but for me, it was absolute perfection. Read it. Read it now.
This book has sat on my shelves for years and I finally decided to give it a go while in the mood for a literary mystery. Unsurprisingly, the reading experience was overshadowed by my anger towards the author and her transphobic views...and also it was slow as hell. In theory I should love this series, but, no. I may pick up a used copy of the second book and see if it picks up but my expectations are low.
Pretty short and generally basic concepts, but the format made it all very digestible and actionable.
I have loved all of Laura Dave's books, but I found this to be incredibly lackluster.
Oof, this was pretty bad. Boring, flat characters and uninspired writing. The religious subplot and fat/food shaming did not appeal to me whatsoever. Two stars only for the two gay couples in the book, who really weren't written well either. Skip it.
Original reaction upon finishing the book: Her best yet - ten stars. Book of the year for me, I'm calling it now.
Full review:
Emily Henry has outdone herself with “Funny Story,” a heartfelt gem that is truly her best book yet. I inhaled this book in one sitting, propelled not only by the pitch perfect romance, but by the multitude of characters who all blossom beautifully by the final page.
Daphne, stung by a painful betrayal, finds solace in the quaint town of Waning Bay. There, she crosses paths with Miles, the enigmatic ex of her fiancé's childhood friend. What begins as an awkward fake-dating arrangement soon evolves into something deeper and far more meaningful.
Henry's talent for crafting realistic and relatable characters shines through. You'll cheer for Daphne as she rebuilds her life, laugh with Miles as he sheds his emotional armor, and feel warmly embraced by the circle of friends who surround them. The slow burn romance between Daphne and Miles is masterfully orchestrated, simmering with undeniable chemistry and emotional depth that makes their eventual connection all the more satisfying.
But “Funny Story” offers more than just swoon-worthy romance. It beautifully weaves in themes of enduring friendship and the power of found family. The relationships between Daphne, Julia, and Ashleigh are a testament to the unwavering support and love that can emerge from unexpected places. This multifaceted approach elevates the story beyond a typical romance, offering a richness and resonance that lingers long after the final page.
If you're searching for a witty, heartwarming story with characters who stay with you long after the last chapter, look no further than “Funny Story.” It's a delightful read that celebrates the joys of friendship, second chances, and finding love in the most unexpected places. Don't miss it!
This book hit a lot closer to home that I was expecting, but I loved it. I've never read (or seen?) a book that centers around a main character with severe anxiety, and I think it's handled very realistically and positively here. Really well done on audiobook. Don't listen to your lizard brain, just keep going.
Sefino. Enough said.
Wonderfully detailed and clever book.
Hope there are more Odd-Fish adventures to come!
Oh my, I love Bolton's books! Gripping and excellently paced- and I can't wait for more Lacey and Joesbury! I definitely wanted more out of the pair at the ending but still satisfied- I hope she keeps going with these two.
I found this book to be incredibly drawn out and dull, and I never connected with or cared for any of the characters. They all felt like bad caricatures of classic stereotypes with no real personality. I doubt I'll be continuing this series when there are many stronger authors in the genre.
A lot heavier than her other books, this was hard to read at points. It redeems itself at the end.
Lots of great information and a very positive tone. I like that this addresses a more holistic approach, which many books about Crohn's do not. Some typos throughout, but not enough to distract from the beneficial information provided. Highly recommended as a self education starting point.
Predictable, unrealistic and not nearly as heartwarming as I would have liked. The literary equivalent of an especially bad chick flick.
I loved the cover of this one, and was sold when I saw how many five star reviews it had. However, it's rubbish. I love to escape with a good British chick lit story now and then but this one didn't really do it for me. It's going straight to Powells for credit.
