This was one of the first romances I ever read, and thanks to the fabulous ladies at the Old School Romance Book Club on Facebook who helped me figure out the title, I was able to enjoy it once again!
I can see why I fell in love with this story as a starry-eyed teenage girl. The heroine Splendor is a fairy princess. A Basket of Wishes is whimsical, funny, and there are some pretty steamy love scenes. (Splendor's habit of floating when she has an orgasm was the one thing that stood out in my mind all these years, lol)
I love the cover also (the original cover from 1995). Jourdian looks absolutely besotted with Splendor, as well he should be. ;)
A very enjoyable trip down memory lane!
4 1/2 stars!
First off, that COVER. Doesn't it just make your heart melt? sigh
As for the story, a romance between an ex-soldier on a rescue mission to save his late army buddy's wife and child, and a NUN? Count me in!
Loved this book just as much as the first in the series...I was so excited for Nobody's story since meeting him in book 1 and I wasn't disappointed. If you like the strong silent type, the tortured hero, you'll love Nobody.
I also appreciate that the author chose to write this series on an American Indian reservation, as I think that setting is pretty rare.
I started this thinking it sounded intriguing, if a little (very) unconventional, but I was not prepared for the emotional depth of this story. Both the hero and heroine had something horrific happen in their childhoods that twisted sex in their minds, and because of this, they understand each other in a way no previous sexual partners have. The more you learn of their tortured pasts and the reasons for their proclivities, the more your heart breaks for them, and the more you root for them as they tentatively try to form a meaningful bond outside of a sexual one. They are just two strangers fulfilling a mutual need, but they long for so much more.
This is a story that is epic in scope and powerfully told. It is the tale of a woman trying to find her place in a world that doesn't understand her. In a world that wants to silence her. This is the tale of a suffragette. It is also a tale of love and loyalty, but it's so much more than that.
Susan has truly written a masterpiece, made even more compelling by the fact that it isn't just a story comprised of completely made-up events and experiences. The things Nora went through really did happen to women back then. They really were treated in such a way, and there were times as I read that I found myself completely overcome with emotion. I was angry, but also thankful for the sacrifices made by those brave women who fought so hard for the rights we hold dear today. The rights we so often take for granted. Which is why it is a book I will give to my daughters to read when they are older. It's history exquisitely brought to life.
It is against this backdrop that we are given the romance of Lady Nora and William Frazier. As the daughter of an earl, the American heir to a railroad fortune isn't good enough for her in the eyes of her family. Nora and William's love is forbidden, but they find a way to be together against truly impossible odds. Theirs is a bond that will not be broken, and while we are taken on quite a journey in the finding of it, they at last get their beautiful, sigh-worthy HEA.
Hot, wicked fun!! There's just something about a good boy who does wickedly bad things to and with his lady.
The hero cheats numerous times on his mentally ill wife, causing her to kill herself. I can't view him as a hero after learning that.

When Garon gets the news he's about to be transferred to a new assignment, his entire world comes crashing down around him, for as a guardian angel, a new charge can only mean one thing.
His Jessie, the girl he's watched over from the moment of her birth, the human he'd been created to protect, is about to die.
Can he stand by and let her be destroyed? Or will he dare to do the unthinkable.
Dare to fall.

Jessica Martin doesn't believe in happily ever after. Prince Charming is just a lie bought by starry-eyed women, and she's far from that anymore.
No man has ever measured up to the one who lives in her imagination. With no real family, just temporary ones that came and went, she's had few constants in her life, but the make-believe friend from her childhood has always been there for her. Always.
Too bad George isn't real.
So when a mysterious man rescues her from danger, she can't help but be suspicious. Her Good Samaritan is blond-haired, blue-eyed, and drop dead gorgeous, the complete embodiment of her perfect man, but he's more than what he seems. The strange familiarity in his eyes, his touch...it shouldn't be there.
What is he hiding?

I love the story, I just wish there had been more of it in the main H/h's pov. I haven't read another romance where so much of the book is in a 3rd character's pov, but Freya, our heroine who is not the Duke's darling, is nothing if not nonconforming, so it stands to reason that her book would be the same.
I very much appreciated the use of actual history for Harlowe's background! And I look forward to reading Messalina's story next. Her hatred of the man who is to be her hero makes it all the more intriguing.
A great new-to-me author I discovered through #cockygate. Thanks, FH! I will definitely be reading more from Tara Crescent.
I bought this book on a whim, having no idea what to expect, but boy, am I glad I did! I couldn't put it down, and it's been awhile since I've read a romance THAT good. “A Candle in the Dark” is, hands down, one of the best romances I've ever read.
First of all, the setting. This is NOT another boring romance set in Regency England, which, quite frankly, I've grown rather tired of. “A Candle in the Dark” takes you from New York to the lush, exotic jungle of Panama, and I enjoyed every single minute of it!
Your heart breaks for both the hero and heroine, as you quickly discover that they are both broken individuals in desperate need of someone to love. Both have given up on such a frivolous notion. Ana, the heroine, is a prostitute who goes by The Duchess...the ice princess who never melts for anyone, and hides her heart behind a protective wall. After killing the man who is abusing her, she desperately needs to disappear, and she hires Cain D'Alessandro to help her. Cain is a doctor, but is haunted by his past failures and the complete lack of faith his parents had in him. He's turned to alcohol to drown out the memories and dark voices in his head. He is a SERIOUS alcoholic...the kind that gets physically ill if he doesn't get his next drink.
Together this couple learn to trust and love, and it is SO sweet when they do.
The steam level on this book is much lower than what I usually prefer, but the story was SO good I didn't care one whit. There is only one love scene, but it has an agonizingly sweet buildup, and the scene definitely delivers. It's erotic and sensual, while still being incredibly tender.
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something different than the norm, and who enjoys books with tortured heroes (and tortured heroines as well!) who find healing in each other. There is plenty of emotional angst, but the ending is definitely sweet and satisfying.
An awesome read, and as I said, probably one of the best romances I have ever read. Seriously, it's THAT good!
