What can I even say? This is a raw, brutal and beautiful book about the most irreparable disaster a human can endure, the loss of a little child. Delaney writes beautifully and without holding back how he felt. I'm thankful for the tears and the perspective it gave me.
Once again my heart was jerked from one side to the other in this epic space opera. I wept, I felt hopeful, angry, relieved. This saga has yet to disappoint me and I can't wait for book 7.
3.4 stars,
I think I had too high expectations for this book when I started it. I didn't really clicked all that much with the main character and the dystopian society in the story was pretty gentle compared to others I have read. However I enjoyed the author's references to 80's movies and videogames, as well as picturing young people's culture during the 80's , specially on videogame/fantasy/sci fi themes.
I bought this book maybe 10 years ago and started reading it, but then I stopped not very far into it, and didn't try again. Not because I hated it, but I guess it was just too dense and a little too slow for young, impatient me at the time. I picked it up again after reading somewhere how this book was a “love story between father and son”, and as a father myself, I immediately wanted to read it. I did and I can say that statement is true. I felt the frustration and desperation of the world the man and the boy were living. I was able to relate to the emotions the man felt for his boy, and I shed a tear at the end. In my opinion, a book that is able to stir emotions in you is a good book. And this was one of those for me. Like the man, I hope I can carry the fire for my boy and help him do the same.
Recomendado.
I have read many books about personal finance as I like to handle and optimize my own economy for the future, and have been doing it for several years now; so I'm by no means new to the concepts and traditional practices about this subject. I must say that for me, this is one of the best books I've read on personal financial planning. The author describes a solid portfolio of tools to measure, control and safely grow the family's assets or wealth using available instruments; with thorough explanations of why he recommends them. I appreciated McCormick's take on family financial planning coming from his professional experience managing much larger financial portfolios and businesses. I've certainly learned new concepts about family financial planning that I will use in my own life, for me that's what makes a book stand out.
Wow this was a really entertaining book, loved the intertwined humor Mr. Dennis uses to convey his message about this cliche topic. He pointed quite correctly, that there are many other things more important in life than money, but as any other person in a free country we are free to choose whatever road we want to take. So he writes what he has learned about it for any of those who wish to walk that path. IMHO one of the best books on this topic, from somebody who actually went through all of it to tell it how it really is. Great read!
A sobering read. Definitely gives you something to think about and to give thanks for. His words to his daughter really hit home in me being a new father. I recommended 100%.
A very interesting read for me, I particularly found fascinating the interviews of german officers shortly after the war and letter extracts from german soldiers in the field during it until the final defeat of the Wehrmacht.
5 stars. One of those books that make you want to take action and change your behavior, in this case, for me; regarding my own decisions about nutrition. That is what makes a book stand out!
I enjoyed how Esther Perel writes about this charged topic, doing it in such a way that keept me engaged throughout the book. She really helps one think about marriage, but gives us the opportunity to question the traditional ideas with maturity and insight.
I enjoyed this book. It was a good thriller story that kept me interested for the most part. The first novel I've read from John Grisham. I liked the character development, story complexity and the author's story telling style. However I felt the story to be a little rushed towards the end. Anyway, a good ol' attention-grabbing thriller for sure!
This book offers great value on identifying a proven strategy and a set of tactics that will help you build a profitable business and escape the “scripted” life. The author draws on his own experience as an entrepreneur which I find authentic. The book is fairly long and I felt it start to drag around the middle. Despite the amount of fluff around some points and repetitive information from his last book TMF, it really packs a PUNCH for getting the reader off his butt and working on earning LIBERTY in the form of entrepreneurship.
My second Gaiman book. A story I liked, filled with fantasy, mystery and nostalgia; made me think about my childhood years; in a similar way such as the protagonist reflected on half remembered adventures and things that were true back then but aren't anymore. With wonders and fears, amazement and disappointments. I think most of us can relate to some of that.
I enjoyed the narration by Gaiman, personally getting a longing feeling from it that just adds to the mystery of the story.
Vaya narración de la historia de Santiago Nasar. La última parte me envolvió con emoción y un sentido de expectativa aún y cuando sabíamos que iba a pasar. Excelente historia y muy recomendable, nada menos de lo que puedes esperar del maestro GGM.
4.5 stars.
I found very interesting the hypotheses described in this book, and will definitely study more some of the concepts that the author explained in order to improve my own “happiness level” and become more conscious of my own behavior. I fully recommend this book to anyone that wants to understand more clearly how our mind and emotions work together.
As others have pointed out, maybe a little repetitive on the main idea; but then again sometimes that's what our minds need to really grasp it. I think I did, and the Slight Edge opened my mind to new possibilities; but also, made me realize the ways on which I've been doing this already on some areas in my life. Excellent addition to anyone's personal development library.
A really thought provoking book for me. If a book actually makes you re-think your behavior and to make changes at some point; then it's a winner. This was one of those books for me. Recommended.
This is the first time I read a book by James Hollis, as I first discovered him thanks to a podcast where he was the guest speaker on, precisely discussing this book just some months ago. Somehow, his spot on ideas and the immense amount of insight he delivered resonated with me and got me immediately hooked. I am grateful for being able to discover his writing and ideas.
There's not much else that I can say that others haven't already mentioned. I'll just say that there's so much insight and grounding ideas here that anyone can take something useful, even if you are starting to live your life as an adult. Truly a chest full of wisdom for a more conscious life. I can't wait to read more of his work.
Me gusto mucho. Cuanta verdad hay en la descripción de lo complejo que es la vida y las personas, no todo es solo sombra o solo luz.
This is an excellent book about attachment theory and how it relates to therapy work. I learned a great deal about how this works. The main ideas I take away are how “mentalization” and “mindfulness” interact and how they can be combined to use as a powerful tool for mental wellbeing.
I feel the book is geared towards, or more useful for practicing therapists or psychology professionals, so being neither one of those (other than curious on the subject), a lot of the more “technical”, and clinical/psychology field ideas were hard for me to relate or transfer to my life experience. Nevertheless a big resource for anyone interested on knowing more about attachment theory and how psychological therapy works and how it can helps anyone live a better life.
What an insightful book, another gem by James Hollis, and probably my favorite of the few I have read of his authoring. Personally, reading his words and the way he distills Jung's complex and deep ideas, refreshes my conviction of diving deeply inward into my own humanity, and make this journey truly my own, even if it's not what I think it's about. Excellent book.
