I haven't read this book since elementary school and it still was a fun read. It's definitely something that I can see myself reading with the kiddo that's currently on its way at some point in the future. That being said, if I had read this for the first time at 30 I would probably have rated it 3 stars.
Simply Fantastic. It's one of those books that you'll be thinking about for long after you've read it. The author describes this on his blog as Lord of the Flies meets Alien. I don't know how much I agree with the alien part but it definitely is very similar to Lord of the Flies. Except, while not a huge fan of Lord of the Flies, I absolutely loved this book.
I applaud Charles Yu in his ambition but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. Good concept, bad the execution falls flat.
I haven't read this book since I was in middle school. It more than lived up to what I remembered.
Fantastic world, but not so fantastic writing. It bothered me how little attachment I felt to the characters.
The first 2/3rds or so of this book was fantastic, but then it turned into just politics from that point forward, and lost most of the charm and wonder that was present in the beginning. However, the ending still left me looking forward to the sequel.
The first 30% of this book was really hard for me to get through because I just didn't enjoy it. While it did get better after that, I never loved it, but I am still glad that I spent the time reading it.
Would be a good book for younger readers as it is not as dark as something like Night, but I think I would have given this 2 stars if it weren't for the subject matter.
If Gone Girl wasn't on Amazon's 100 Books to Read in a Lifetime, which I'm reading through with my wife, then I would have quit about 50 pages in. The first 50 pages are full of so much navel gazing that it was painful to read.I will admit that I did chuckle a bit when later in the novel one of the two main characters actually admitted as such. That bit did get a bit better, but the characters have zero redeeming qualities and the twist happens halfway through the book. The cards had been laid on the table and there was still half a book to get through. The only characters that aren't completely terrible are Go and Rhonda. But Rhonda doesn't even get any sort of personality until the novel is wrapping up.
I could see it coming but I was still pissed at the ending. This is it? Seriously?
Painful to read. This book needs some major editing. In fact, I doubt that it was even proofread.
Wow. This was absolutely nothing like the movie and I hate that it took me so long to read this. Fantastic military fiction with some philosophy peppered in.
I really enjoyed this book, but it just didn't quite click like Ready Player One, or The Last Starfighter, did for me.
I became so engrossed in the story that I forgot how short it was going to be, to that point that I was surprised when the book ended.
Quite a different take on the apocalypse genre. In fact, I would go as far as to say that this book counts more as literature than most any other book I've read recently. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and even got really choked up at one point.
