This is a fascinating read for anyone in the software development space. The lessons and take-aways I have from this book will stay with me throughout my career. If you are serious about software development and do not have the luxury of staying in greedfield projects your entire career, you need to pick up this book.
This was a very interesting read. The whole idea on how one goes about making decisions is something I haven't really thought about, but after reading this book I need to rethink how I decide. Throughout the book Annie give some very thought provoking examples to help you along your journey. I'd definitely recommend this book, but I do struggle with seeing how I will go about my daily life adopting what I have learned here due to how drastic of a change I'll need to make.
I really enjoyed this book. Even as a non-manager tracked employee there were plenty of take-aways on how to be a better employee and plenty of take-aways on how to make your work environment the best it can be. It's great to have a book written in such a way where you can jump around or skip sections that are not pertinent to your situation; or go back and read sections that resonated with you again.
After absolutely loving [b:Dark Matter 27833670 Dark Matter Blake Crouch https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1472119680l/27833670.SY75.jpg 43161998], I had some really high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, it fell a bit flat. Even though the topic of this book rivals Dark Matter in terms of intrigue and interest, I feel that the plot to this story just a bit lackluster. I certainly will not stop reading Crouch's future books, but this is not such a home run as Dark Matter was.
Oh my... I think I am definitely done with Cormac McCarthy books. Either I don't get them or my mind refuses to accept them as good works of art. I did not like this book much, though the last few chapters almost drew me back in. Oh well...
This is a solid book that outlines a lot of best practices of software development. As I think with all these styles of books, take away a tid-bit or two and you have succeeded. This one gave me a few points to think about to better myself!
This book was purchased by my wife, but I was short on audible credits so I thought I'd give it a go. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is a fun read, but that's about as far as I would go with it. The character development was interesting, but nothing really grabbed me towards them. This might be a 3.5 star rating; give this book a go if you are interested in Savannah, but that's about it.
This was a very fun introduction to the universe John Scalzi built. I am glad I listened to this, however, there was just bits of immaturity throughout the book that I thought probably could have been left out. Glad to see this is a series...
Probably should have passed on this one... Lift is not my favorite character and having an entire novella on her was too much. Luckily it was short.
Pretty interesting ideas shared in this book. definitely took away some ideas on how to better take notes in my career, but I feel the book focused too much on taking notes for academic publishing. I'd give it a read though, it opens your mind to building an external brain mapping which might help everyone.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes. It kept me wanting to finish the whole time, and then once ended I wanted more. Really enjoy this universe, and book 4 was a fine addition.
what a wild ride this was. reminds me heavily of Stoner by John Williams, but Hunger didn't pull me in as much.
Definitely worth a read if you are into books that don't have a solid conclusion or are about the mundanity of life.
Foundation was pretty good if not for ending so abruptly... It was interesting on how it is still timely in the “future” technologies for being written so long ago. I am very interested in sticking with this series!
This series is so good! I have to knock off a star for some parts where I feel the decisions made by the character were made for plot sake and did not come off as genuine based on their character's persona. But I will continue this series until the end and be very sad when it's over.
Not really sure how I feel about listening to these kind of non-fiction books, but this one was pretty good.
This book is great, really interesting science fiction and super enjoyable to listen to on our drive up north for Thanksgiving.
This is about what I expected for a sequel in this series... i love the premise and ideas put forth in this book, but they never had the weight they needed. it's a fun book to read, but that's about it.
I was actually really upset at this book. I am not sure if it was due to being stuck in traffic while listening to it or just the overall message of this book did not resonate with me. We can all agree that if you had the ability to focus on your work you'd get better results, sure. But after listening to this book with overall generalizations that fit the mold of either journalism or tenor track professorship, I could not see a path to adopt anything more than the basic understanding that one could benefit from some focused time.
And then the few examples in this book where the author found success were periods of time that were outlandish and abusive. Bill Gates sleeping on his keyboard because he was in “deep work”, the author himself thinking of mathematical equations while hanging out with his child. The whole premise of this book was that you could succeed with creating time for deep work, but then example after example were people pushing themselves beyond normal deep work to succeed.
Maybe I missed the point, but I was very upset with the examples of what I would classify as the 10x engineering mentality which I am not sure is something I am willing to promote.
What a super interesting sci-fi. This book had a lot of twists and turns I did not expect, yet almost every character introduced in this book was likable. I would highly recommend this book if you are looking for something of a twist on space science fiction!
The story was pretty good, and I really like the idea of time travel, but I think this is the first time an audiobook ruined a good book for me... maybe I will try and read it myself in paper form.
Right off the bat, I am leaning more towards a 3.5 star rating, but I am willing to give the start of this series a bit of a pass. This is one of the first real new-aged science fiction book that I have read and it really took a while to get use to the pop references and the speech patterns of the main character. But after that and I was able to get to the heart of the story it certainly was a fun one. I'd recommend this book if you want a bit of a lighter science fiction read.
