An excellent telling of Batman's origin and first year, demonstrating his rarely-seen uncertainties as he figures things out. But perhaps more prominently, a strong sense of the corruption Gordon was up against as he entered Gotham. As well, the tone is masterfully set in this story. Loved it.
This is a great “what if” scenario for Superman. It steers clear from taking any obvious approach, includes known characters in new roles that work well, and has enough twists and turns to keep you turning the page.
Touching on the personal side of Superman's life through 4 stories, told across 4 separate seasons of his life, this story manages to have a big emotional impact. Superman's personal struggles, from struggling to fit in to being frustrated that he can't do everything, show that there's far more to the classic superhero than just his strength and invincibility. I loved it.
I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting Earthbound by way of this book's narrative recap alongside relating to real life stories and experiences. While the author indulged a bit too much in the real life experiences at times, overall I found the stories interesting as a relation to the game's events and I'm glad it was written in this way. I was left emotional by the end, as Earthbound's story hits hard in its events and metaphors, and the author clearly understood that and conveyed the final chapters in a way that had me feeling the weight of the ending of the game all over again,
This was a really fun, quick story by Akira Toriyama. His humour and storytelling style is present as ever here, and of course his art style is as joyous to behold as ever. A heartwarming story with some great world-building, given the length of the story, it was a lot of fun to read.
