Very interesting read! Filled with wonder, and written in an everyday language. Easy to understand, yet filled with thought provoking ideas
Somewhat depressing, the main character doesn't really live for anything, and that's the whole point.
I liked it, it's along the proud social realism of danish authors like Jan Sonnergaard.
The books seems to say that there is no point in life, unless you choose to create one, either by joining a religious movement claiming to know the point of life, or actually choosing to live for something other than yourself.
Spændende! Tung i sproget, men med gode pointer!
Bestemt ikke læst på femten minutter, men omvendt ikke en tung afhandling. God til at sætte tankerne igang, og overveje (i dette tilfælde) vigtigheden af håb!
An alright book. Didn't quite move me as others have, but I enjoyed it and would recommend it.
Fun little book, easily read. Straight to the point.
Intriguing concept of the Butterfly man. Don't want to spoil it, suffice to say the concept has probably been done before, but none the less I enjoyed the read and the ideas presented.
What would you do to save the one you love. How far can love carry you and your actions.
Interesting book. I felt it dragged on, and was a bit long. Maybe because I just never got really into it. I felt the ideas were interesting. I couldn't help to draw some parallels to recent world events and the subcultures presented in multiethnic environments. I don't think it was the authors intentions to do so, but I felt in some ways that the way an entirely different “species of humans” lived off-grid within our society was a commentary on the worlds status.
All in all, a good book. I felt it in my bones at times, and the things our main character(s) must do to survive left me provoked and uncertain about how far I would go myself.
Great read!
An interesting character, Gatsby. Somehow impressive and interesting, but at the same time shallow and unrealistic in his expectations and wants.
All in all, a good book, which I enjoyed reading and would definitely recommend to anyone with a modicum of interest in humans interacting and expecting of each other.
I liked it.
There is the “basic” story of guerillas hiding in the mountains in spain and the dynamiteer who has come to blow up a bridge. That story is rather good and interesting, although somewhat lengthy. However the inner monologues and the amount that isn't said in the intercharacter dialogue makes for a look into the intricacies of one side of the Spanish Civil War. The various beliefs, the hopes and dreams and the stark reality that meets in the various characters that this novel encompass.
Take it for what it is, but there is no doubt (in my mind) that Ernest Hemingway was an idealist that fought in the Spanish Civil War, and in that war was forced to face a stark realism that contrasted with his ideals. Furthermore he also witness how others saw the war and the ideals they fought for. And that's what the story is ultimately about.
Will maybe return to write more about this great book once it's settled in my mind.
A tough read!
The language is slow, the story is gruesome and filled with violence and the story is without true excitement. With all that being said, it was a very interesting read!
It's well written, however the linguistic choices lend it a very slow pace and I was never truly ‘excited' or ‘glued to my seat' waiting for another thrill.
With all that being said, it's a good book with an interesting story to tell about mans abilities, desires and actions when there is no moral or ethical compass to guide them, except their own greed and lust.
As always some fun from Terry Pratchett hand. Those who've read him know what to expect, and this who haven't should read something by the author. Not necessarily this one, as I'm not sure if I would see it as one of the best. However it definitely is one of his better works! Recommend, but not overly so.
Really good read. Hardly as good as American Gods, but a very cool book none the less. Didn't raise as many questions nor was it as interesting nor insightful as American Gods, but a good book :)
A thrilling read about a boring man who doesn't really ‘do' anything remarkable.
I found it a page-turner with every page being better and more gripping than the last!
Highly, highly recommended!
I was entertained. The book is a highly fictionalized autobiography, made up of little vignettes. Some of it might be true, most of it is probably lies and exaggeration.
I originally believed everything I read in the book, but after a discussion about it with my girlfriend I started to notice all the little things (and big things) that couldn't possibly be true.
All that said, it's a highly interesting book, and entertaining too. It's like being told an autobiography from the view of a kid as the kid is living through. None of it is quite a lie, just too fantastical to be quite real, like a child telling you it's fanciful view of yesterday happenings.
Highly recommended, but it might not be to everyone's tastes
Interesting, and well written. However it seemed to me to drag on a bit at spots. I take it that was because of the time of writing, were I'm accustomed to a somewhat more hurried writing style.
It wasn't a bad book, it was a good who-dun-it, however, the langauge meant i longer reading time than I would have prefered for a who-dun-it.
Very good, and highly interesting. Gives a fascinating insight into the meaning of war and education under such a regime. I found it very good!
Very entertaining!
It's sometimes a bit heavy on the scientific stuff, but although it's heavy I found it interesting and insightful.
The story as such is engaging, featuring one mans fight for survival against all odds on a planet that seems intent on killing him.
The character, which carries most of the book, seems believable, at times unlucky, but on the whole a character that I would like to believe isn't entirely fictional in his intelligence, ways of dealing with problems and his general insight into his own psyche and the needs for survival.
I found it very good and have no problem recommending it.
Wonderful, exciting magical realism. I was in for a ride, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
It isn't for everyone, but as I enjoyed Anansi's boys, and American Gods by Neil Gaiman, and most books by Svend Åge Madsen this book was right up my ally.
But of a slow start, but once it got going I had a hard time putting it down!
