See allThis is a genuinely great and accessible book for people looking to get into game design. It delves into what "play" is and how fun is derived from our mind. It sometimes repeats itself sometimes but otherwise it's a great start.
Very hard read due to frequent usage of in-universe slang. It feels similar to modern day gen alpha brain rot slang and that makes it a slog to pick up. It's all told in first person by the main character so you don't get a break from it, I constantly kept thinking "What the fuck are you saying?" And that got on my nerves the more I read.
I respect the author and his impact on literature and movies but this is not for me, dropped after chapter 3.
Was my first proper read of a non-fiction book, teaches a lot of design and how humans interface with objects. At the end Norman says you can read chapters of a non-fictional book like this in any order, which pissed me off at the time.
Ending kinda sucked rest was good, comes with my favourite quote: “If you want my sympathy, you can find it in the dictionary: between sh*t and syphilis.”
